I'd recommend this new DW documentary about shadow tankers if this has piqued your interest.
The techniques used are pretty impressive - using radio gear to spoof the location of ships, or transferring oil between them to hide it's true origin. Unfortunately these are also dangerous techniques as not knowing a ships location means it's more likely to be in a collision, and transferring tools often leak into the ocean.
