I'm guessing the shutdown will end soon once this gets more widespread. One month of not being paid in a world where a lot of people are paycheck to paycheck is unacceptable. Once people start getting affected in their day to days (especially people that can afford to travel) they're gonna start paying more attention. Really hope the Dems can get better at their messaging though and not cave.

My hunch is that a combination of ATC sick-outs (right in time for Thanksgiving!) and folks having no SNAP benefits (again, just in time for Thanksgiving) would end the shutdown. Who caves first...

this would be a great time for the dems to grow their spines, but they've been really good at disappointing us for a long time....

The SNAP benefit news should definitely be a top level post.

It's not clear to me why any of them are showing up for work they're not being paid for? I guess some absurd law is at play? Or is it just fear of reprisal down the road and insufficient labour power?

I'm pretty sure they'll get back-pay once the money starts flowing again. Don't show up and you'll never get that money. And it's not like they can quit and go work for a competitor.

And that's why some employees aren't even bothering.

Oh yes, definitely. It's more of a quiet strike they can't rule illegal. I'm sure jobs like this have people that are almost capped on sick days as is.
