In today's episode of "huh?", Donald Trump suddenly and without warning introduced a healthcare plan that would extend ACA subsidies for 2 years on Monday (yesterday). Yes, the same ones that Republicans spent 40 days shutting down the government to defend the removal of.

Per reporting, this seemed to have completely blindsided republican congresspeople, many of whom have invested their political identity in denying ACA expansion. We also have the strange position of many Democrats congresspeople being aligned with Trump against GOP congresspeople.

Can I just say, I for one hope that Mamdani will be spending more time in DC. I'm not saying that this is an outcome of that meeting, but I do wonder if having more progressive voices or even opinions might influence what Trump does. He seems to just parrot recent talking points and it would be interesting to see if this could be used for progressive legislation. I was laughing with a few friends yesterday that we'd all be very in for a dementia driven hero's journey story arch in his last two years.

It would be fantastic for everyone if we somehow end up with Opposite World Grima Wormtongue in Trump's ear. (I don't know enough about Mamdani specially, but I just mean a fictitious morally upright person.) Somehow Angel Donald becomes magically attached to listening to voice of reason, enacting compassion and equitable policies, and somehow placating the alt right personality cult into self hypnotizing themselves, who then trip over themselves into upholding those values in sincerity. That would be a way of healing the divide that no one could have seen coming.

I don't think this is even new with Trump. He's always seemed to change based on the last charismatic person he talked to.

It's been pretty well seen that trump is lead around rather significantly by the last person to talk to him.

What's hilarious is how his administration bought a portion of Intel - which is straight up socialist - but his socialism-hating base didn't care because they don't actually know what socialism is.

He has very thoroughly surrounded himself with idealogues and drifters. He is swayed by the last person for a while, but people who actually care about effective governance get under his skin after a few rounds and he discards them.

I guess the trick would be to have a very large number of progressives to stage. So each one could go just one or two rounds and get the sway without running into his same-person-interaction limit.

Well he's had "concepts of a plan" (yes really) for a while now about how to implement a big beautiful healthcare better than Biden. It appears that concept of a plan resulted in just... Suggesting an extension of what was already there. This time it's him taking the credit and I wouldn't put it past him if that was on purpose.
Not to say it was a masterful plan or anything, it's about as transparent of a plan possible short of doing nothing at all, but it may just be that.

"Concepts of a plan" is what an unqualified intern faking their way says at daily stand-ups.

Remember when Obama was president and Republicans spent 7 years talking about how they were going to repeal and replace Obamacare ever single day? Did that ever happen?

Very nearly. Republicans narrowly lost a vote 51-49 in the senate to repeal the ACA during Trump’s first term. It took a terminally ill no-fucks-given-anymore John McCain to make the critical vote.
