    Sputnik, along with RT, are sources I tend to mistrust because they're arms of the Russian government and often have ulterior/questionable motives when it comes to US news.

    Only other vaguely-reputable sources I found were NY Daily News (which is still tabloidy) and the El Paso ABC affiliate.

    edit: Alamogordo Daily News, which is affiliated with USA Today, is reporting it too so it's definitely true according to legit news sources.

    Speculation on HN has suggested that the observatory overlooks White Sands Missile Range, so someone or something may have been clandestinely collecting SIGINT on tests of missiles conducted there...

    Speculation on HN has suggested that the observatory overlooks White Sands Missile Range, so someone or something may have been clandestinely collecting SIGINT on tests of missiles conducted there and sending it to a foreign government. Seems like the most-plausible "it's not aliens" theory yet.
