Now that the dangerous high-tension cables are gone, the area should be safe to work in again. There's no need to defuse them with some kind of controlled demolition, so rebuilding the dish would be possible now if enough money were thrown at it.

It was in disrepair because of a lack of funding in the first place...so that’s highly unlikely.

Unfortunately the NSF hasn't had a favourable view of funding Arecibo for over a decade now. I very clearly remember the verbal protests from the SETI@home community (which receives Astropulse and radio data from Arecibo) about the potential closure of the observatory back in the late 2000's. Sadly now even SETI@home is winding down too.

Planetary radio science is massively important for characterising near Earth asteroid threats, and unfortunately with the loss of Arecibo data, the whole field is taking quite a large step backwards. There's nothing really interesting on the horizon other than small working groups looking into space-based and lunar radio observatories which are probably decades away.

This is off topic. I don’t wanna be that guy, but that’s who I am, so indulge my OCD, if you will: that’s a lot of tags. They are also huge. sorry about that

That’s fine. The “official” position regarding tags on Tildes is distinct from my own. In any case, you can edit the tags, if you want.

If you don't like seeing so many tags, why not just disable "Show topic tags in listing pages (home page, groups, etc.)" in your settings? It will still show the "important" tags on the main listings pages, in this case "astronomy.radio", but will hide the rest of them.
