Please don't post scores in post titles discussing world cup matches.
Not everyone lives in a time zone where they can watch the matches as they happen. I choose one match each day to watch before looking up the rest of the scores to catch up, but I can't watch them live due to being in a less convenient time-zone, so I have to wait until the next day.
I chose Japan - Colombia as my next match and from @Parliament 's post on the match it looks like it would have been a great match to watch.
I understand wanting to discuss matches and the tournament - but can we have a fan's agreement not to put scores or spoilers in post titles?
Since Tildes also shows a snippet of text from the topic body, spoilers could also be inadvertently revealed if they show up near the beginning of the topic body. @Deimos I hope is considering spoiler support for topic bodies.
https://gitlab.com/tildes/tildes/issues/57 is tracking spoiler text within comments which I suppose would apply to text in the OP topic body too, and would solve the problem, assuming Tildes never adds support for inline image posts which would complicate spoilers.
Yeah, I could probably do something very simple for the near future and just hide the text excerpt if the post has a "spoiler" tag.
I think that should be a rule, and not just for sports: absolutely no spoilers in titles! It's very annoying for those who want to see for themselves. There should also be a spoiler alert in the title for posts containing spoilers.
TL;DR, amen to this!
I think it's at least important to give people the choice on whether they want to be spoiled. Even if I, personally, couldn't give two shits about having something spoiled for myself, I can understand how people might want to preserve that feeling if exploration for themselves. I don't think the pain of omitting a score from a title is equal to the spoiling impact it will likely have on the audience reading titles, an audience who gets no choice in the matter themselves.
A small price to pay for a cleaner, kinder place.
I definitely understand this perspective, but I think that taking away the score from a title devalues the title. I like titles to be as descriptive as possible. Is it unreasonable to ask someone who hasn't watched an event to avoid a forum where that event will likely be discussed? This seems especially true for sports as most people watch sports live (as opposed to television or movies which many people watch after the premier).
For the reasons I discussed I'm unable to watch live and so I'm forced to unsubscribe form ~sports - a forum that I'm actively interested in. In fact I've unsubscribed exactly because I'm so interested - at least until there is some resolution one way or the other.
I think it's reasonable to limit posts titles to avoid giving away results - I feel it's more like a discussion site rather than a news site where we compete for the most informative or provocative title to gain interest. I take your point though.
I'd rather not take part than e.g. have my enjoyment of the Japan Colombia match spoiled.
That's a good point!
I'm working on some title-editing stuff right now, so I can probably start editing scores out of titles fairly shortly. What about info about who wins the game though? Is that also too much, or is it mostly just the actual score?
