I like that he's a proper football nerd. I always like sportspeople who clearly adore their sport.

What an article. Guys like these are so inspiring. I love The Players Tribune--the stories behind sports really flesh out narratives that take place on the field.

That was a really great, inspiring and funny read even for someone like me who knows nothing about the sportsball games. Some of my favorite parts (minor spoilers, just read the article first!):...

That was a really great, inspiring and funny read even for someone like me who knows nothing about the sportsball games. Some of my favorite parts (minor spoilers, just read the article first!):

When some parents wouldn’t let him on the pitch and demanded to see his ID.

and I thought, “Oh, I’m gonna kill your son even more now. I was already going to kill him, but now I’m gonna destroy him. You’re gonna drive the boy home crying now.”

When he bet his junior coach that if he was let off the bench he would score 25 goals by Dec and if he did the coach had to make the team pancakes every day.

Let that be a lesson. You don’t play around with a boy who’s hungry!

When he got called up to Anderlecht at 16 and his friends showed up later that same day to ask why he didn’t come play with them in the park.

my mum was like, “He’s out playing.”
    My friend said, “Playing where?”
    She said, “The final.”

The ending line was poignant too.
