I was kind of surprised to see this article is dated June 25th. Since I was under the impression that surfing, skateboarding, break dancing, and climbing were already part of Paris 2024? But then they also mention Climbing being an event for Tokyo next year, so maybe that's where I've been hearing all the buzz?

Either way, I'm a bit torn on these events. I think Climbing is easy to implement because it seems like it should be easy to make a clear and "obvious" scoring guide for non-climbers who only tune in for the Olympics.
I think Skateboarding will do okay because Snowboarding is already a thing in the Winter so people are used to how you might score those events. In the same vein I'd imagine surfing will also be scored similar and therefore will be okay.

Then you get to Break Dancing. I'm guessing it will be scored similar to floor routines in gymnastics, but personally I'm having a hard time seeing how your average person who only tunes in every 4 years will understand the scoring.

Anyway, interested to see how this turns out. I'm definitely not against adding more sports as time goes on.

I don't think you necessarily need to understand the scoring to enjoy the sport. The display of athleticism is its own entertainment, imo. As long as the judges understand it, that's all I care...

As long as the judges understand it, that's all I care about. Plus presumably as time goes on people will figure out how it works. It's like curling where nobody really knew what was going on until it got really popular a few years ago. Seems to me like now it's one of the more popular winter sports among viewers.

Originally all of these sports were introduced for Tokyo but they're controversially doing this weird joint event for Climbing where it's the equivalent of a 100m sprint, a 10km and a marathon event combined. In 2024, they're breaking sport and bouldering, and speed in to their own events which are more relevant to each other.

I'd imagine the break dancing would be like watching figure skating. It's very impressive but I have no idea how they differentiate the different skaters.

I for one am really excited for this. I watch a lot of weird sports highlights on YouTube when I'm bored and the people who do competitive speed climbing are just insanely talented.

It depends on whether you're interested enough to drop $5.99 on an Amazon Video rental or not but Reel Rock 13 has a short film which is a deep dive in to speed climbing. (among a bunch of...
