    This Seattle Times article is tied to a big weekend here in Seattle, called Seafair, which along with a pirate-themed parade and the Blue Angels flying overhead has what is more or less "NASCAR but on the water" in the form of hydroplane racing.

    I'm not sure how prevalent it is in other parts of the world, I suspect it's a somewhat unique to Seattle thing. The history of it in Seattle has to do with the local boat-building industry combined with the presence of Boeing providing aerospace engineering & jet propulsion knowledge.
