It would be wonderful if Russia understood that in their quest to dominate sport, they've proven that every sporting achievement that they've made in the last 20 years is suspect, and they've basically said that they're not actually good enough to compete at an international level without illegal enhancements.

It's unfair on every level, but the most unfair to any actually gifted russian athletes, who are now forever tarnished by their association with cheating at the highest level.

Honestly I feel like this viewpoint is operating under the assumption that the majority of those competing at an international level aren't supplementing with performance enhancing drugs.

If you look at the history of olympic lifting medals, you'll see a stagnation around the late 90s to current where WADA actually came into fruition and started creating much more difficult doping tests to beat.

But if you really start digging into it, you'll find out that since they've started holding onto blood samples for a longer time and re-testing them when newer methods emerge to detect performance enhancing drugs, that a ton of medals, titles, and records have been stripped from individuals. I forget the exact year, but if I remember correctly something like the 7th place person in a specific lift over a decade ago is now the record holder because of retesting.

Doping goes hand in hand with world class sports (some more than others). The difference with Russia is that they do a poor job hiding it and aren't keeping up to date with the most state of the art techniques to avoid detection.

      Yeah, no, that ain't happening.

What astonishes me repeatedly, when looking at this shit this country does, is how inept and myopic it is in doing the country any good. It is as if the whole point of the strategy behind the government's actions is to discredit Russia so that whatever shit it pulls, rather than be labeled "dangerous action from a powerful state", is perceived as another dirty trick from a near-sighted, self-indulgent, power-hungry knave.

...which may explain a few things, now that I think about it.
