This has been a very long time coming. As someone has has lived in the D.C. are for many years, I am glad that it's finally being changed as it has been a stain on the region.

As a fan of Washington (and the Cowboys, yes it's a difficult relationship) it has been interesting watching the backlash from fans utterly opposed to the name change. Every conversation I've joined or witnessed has boiled down to a NFL version of the confederate flag "but muh heritage" argument.

Studies, papers, and accounts by the numerous Native American (and other) groups that have all stated how they find it offensive and asked for it to be changed are discounted purely due to being from a source they don't like, ignored, or hand waved away with* "I'm 2% [insert tribal group here] and I don't have a problem with it (and won't mention that the 2% is well within the margin of error for the DNA test)"* or "my friend's cousin's step-father's dog once told him that he asked a Native American and they said it's cool".

Now of course the fans are getting a quick and dirty lesson in capitalism because the offended groups have been ignored for so long that the optics in the nation turned to correct the racial profiteering at the same time that the groups went above the owner's head to effect his pocketbook. The first complaints I saw upon the press release this morning were the fans crying over the fact that "sponsors" were listed ahead of "fans" in the closing remark as they come to the realization that Danny "We'll never change the name, NEVER — you can use caps." Snyder is the same as every other billionaire, he only cares about money.

Once the name change is in focus will shift to the Cleveland Indians which have been hiding behind the Redskins name being much worse for a long time now. Although that will likely be a harder sell as many Native American groups still use the name Indian. There are calls, that I don't think will gain traction, for other teams like the Braves and Chiefs to change their names as well.

In a new development, there's a "trademark hobbyist" that saw the writing on the wall in 2014 and since then has been trademarking potential Washington team names and creating merch for them to defend the trademark. Current rumor is that the new name Washington wants to go with is "caught up in trademark disputes", so could very well be this guy negotiating how many zeroes will be on the check Snyder will write.

Being that there's rumor that the NFL have privately told Danny Snyder that the name has to change before the seasons starts, if a name he wants is owned by this guy Snyder doesn't have the time to play lawsuit games and so the hobbyist is presently negotiating how many zeroes are going to be on the check.

Personally hoping for Redtails, but I suspect that's too clever and it'll be something boring like Warriors. My out-there pick is Pigskins so fans can continue referring to them as the "Skins"...

Press release from Jonathan Nez, President of the Navajo Nation: In the release, Nez also suggests:

Press release from Jonathan Nez, President of the Navajo Nation:

This change did not come about willingly by the team’s owners, but by the mounting pressure and advocacy of Indigenous peoples such as Amanda Blackhorse, and many other warriors who fought long and hard for this change.

In the release, Nez also suggests:

Renaming the team “Code Talkers” to honor the Navajo Code Talkers, and other tribal nations who used their sacred language to help win World War II, would set the team on a path to restoring its reputation and correcting the historical misrepresentation of Indigenous peoples.
