MLB player Sean Doolittle said “Sports are a reward for a functioning society.” He was referring mostly to the pandemic but a lot of people are using it in reference to the current situation, and I completely agree. It would be nice to see the NHL join the protest.

Chomsky has also claimed Sports are also a distraction from the dysfunctions of society. Deprived of Basketball, some are denied an escape from confrontation with social problems.

Murray Edelman also says somewhere in Constructing the Political Spectacle that sports are a domain of tactical battle, but not moral battle. There are opponents, but not enemies.

Sports are a luxury we really can't afford. Distracted peoples lose fights they don't know they're in.

If you want to see the truth in this statement go look at this post on r/nba. So many people on there talking about how the games were an escape mechanism for all the bad going on. Whether that means they (a) agree with the players and/or (b) they actually confront the social issues rather than try to ignore them is yet to be seen.

          Another example:

David Chappelle claimed in a recent stand-up performance that Kobe Bryant's 50+ point performance on the night someone killed 9 people at a BLM protest helped hold the nation together.

Won't comment on whether it's actually true, but it's an interesting example of the relationship between sports and society.

It was 9 cops killed at a BLM protest, in 8:46, but his point is more or less the same. I'd already asked, but realized I'd seen it.

And nobody was playing because basketball is off-season then, so... yeah, this is how rumors start, and I accidentally did my part to perpetuate it.

No worries. I did remember that instance, but I watched Kobe's last game live and didn't remember anything really notable happening outside of basketball that day/night.

Wait so Chapelle's story doesn't line up at all? Interesting. That seems sloppy on his part.

I'm really proud of them and the WNBA and MLB players who are going on protest. They're making use of their voices.

I haven’t been able to find a source and the friend that mentioned it fell asleep (I’ll try to remember to look and update tomorrow) but I’ve heard the Raptors are talking about also boycotting the season, which would mean 2 favorites in the West and one favorite in the East who are boycotting. Would be big if true.

Edit: From what I’m reading it looks like Raptors and Celtics are talking about boycotting game 1, which is what I’m assuming my friend mentioned and it was just a miscommunication.
