I used Podcast Addict for a while until I discovered Pocket Casts, and that's been my mainstay since. I switched a while ago, so this may no longer be true, but I found the interface for Pocket Casts a lot more pleasant to use, and it has the few features I really require (auto-downloading of new episodes, syncing/saving subs).
I tried an open source alternative (sorry, can't remember what it was), but it was terribly slow. A day later I was back on Pocket Casts and have been loving it.

That's the point of having multiple shared interests. It's not just NPR. This allows them to make sure the podcast scene stays open, otherwise we could see podcasts get siloed into closed networks.

My insider informant says that pocketcasts will remain an entirely "independent" company, sounds like it's safe to say there won't be any radical changes. ...tbh I'm not sure why NPR bought them.

I know with the release of Android Oreo things were a little buggy. The app would start playing podcasts randomly, and other issues. Everything seems to be good now for me at least. There's a decent amount of settings, but once you go through everything you pretty much never had to touch anything again. I have it auto-check / download episodes every night and the start up page is my subscriptions and I've hidden every other menu. Really clean and easy to use after that!

I used overcast until this week. For some reason, it just stopped downloading episodes and I couldn't force it to start the downloads. I switched to pocket casts and haven't had that problem yet.

I use overcast because with the ios app and web app i can sync my playback between all my devices and even random other computers i might be using for the moment. It’s simple and reliable.

The ability of Overcast and Pocket Casts to boost volumes and trim silences makes them worth it to me. Over the long run, the trim silence feature has really saved some time. I paid for Overcast before it became a subscription model, so I have most all of the features for a one-time fee. I'm not a fan of the subscription model, and I believe Pocket Casts is currently a one-time purchase, so I'd give it a go if you're looking to experiment.

I have been playing around the other day with hearing podcasts on Spotify, since it is a little easier to discover and search on there, but the actual user experience is a pain when auto-play is turned on (and since I actually do want autoplay for music, I can't be bothered to figure out how to turn it off). Plus Spotify pretty much treats podcasts as a playlist and will start going newest to oldest, and that is not ideal if the podcast is in a specific sequential order.
Podcast Repubic on Android. I think it was just the first one I came upon when looking for a decent client that supported HTTP authentication, but I'm happy with it.

I will certainly give it another try when it has a more extensive library though (never thought I’d say that about Spotify!)
I use Pocket Casts on mobile, Rhythmbox (on Linux/Gnome) or Gpodder for desktop. I once wrote my own podcatcher web app (podbaby.me) but not used it for a while, it needs some attention.

I used Podcast Addict on Android previously, and I still think that's a better app, but it's not as convenient as PocketCasts. I just wish there was a good open-source app with the same features as PocketCasts and the ability to cut snippets of audio and share them. Not sure why no podcast app has that yet, it's such an obvious need.

I'm also a pocketcasts user. I'm curious how/if they will change now that NPR bought them.
Woah didn't hear about this!
I tried an open source alternative (sorry, can't remember what it was), but it was terribly slow. A day later I was back on Pocket Casts and have been loving it.
Yeah vertical integration like that scares me. I love pocket casts, but like that it was a distributor only and not also a creator.
That's the point of having multiple shared interests. It's not just NPR. This allows them to make sure the podcast scene stays open, otherwise we could see podcasts get siloed into closed networks.

I use Pocket Casts too. I bought it awhile ago. It has the features I use like auto-downloading, it looks good, and works fine for my needs.
I'd say it looks great, I bought it almost entirely by of its looks.
AntennaPod. It's simple and it works. Also FOSS!
Another vote for FOSS. I try to get all of my software from F-droid: I'm going to try a LineageOS for MicroG ROM when I have a spare day to mess around with my phone...
AntennaPod users unite! It's one of the few apps I really like; it clearly tries to get out of my way and play my podcasts.
I used it for a while, but I think it was buggy for whatever reason. Lots of failed downloads and I found the interface confusing. But I tried it for a while and want to go back if I can get used to it, because FOSS.

Been using PocketCasts for years. Isn't missing any feature that I'd find essential.
Stitcher for the most part because premium and Earwolf shows. It’s not very good though unfortunately. I like Overcast quite a bit but mostly only use it for The Best Show because the voice boost feature helps with the inconsistent levels.

Is Overcast iOS exclusive? I can't find it on the Play Store.
Yeah, it's an exclusive.
I use overcast because with the ios app and web app i can sync my playback between all my devices and even random other computers i might be using for the moment. It’s simple and reliable.
I simply use the Apple Podcast app and it works fine for me. What am I missing out on with these other apps?
I also use the native Podcast app on an iPad. I'm not a heavy listener so I've never felt the need to explore other options.

I've used Stitcher and podcast addict, but these days I just use Google Play.

I'm glad they addressed it, it was really frustrating when it happened. Especially if it happened while I was driving.
I use Castbox now. I used to use Podcast Republic but it had some playback issues and some of my podcasts stopped updating on it.
As soon as I found out that Spotify has podcasts, I switched over. I already have premium so I might as well use a platform that doesn't have ads.
I tried it but found it didn’t have the same catalogue as other podcast apps I’d used previously

I use AntennaPod which is an excellent open source and easy-to-use podcast manager.
I use Beyondpod. No complaints, it serves it's function allthough a recent style change might make me gi out and search for a new one.
I use stitcher, laughable and castbox. Castbox is fairly new. None of them are perfect.
I'm on Player.fm at the moment, because a huge issue for me is cross platform consistency. I would even go premium of it when just a matter of a single purchase rather than an ongoing, perpetual subscription.
Overcast as it was the first with an apple watch app and makes the Apple podcast app look terrible.
I used to use pocket casts, and i occasionally still do, but a load of the podcasts i listen to are either exclusively on youtube or, while they're on pocketcasts too, on spotify which adds a layer of convenience of not having to pause my music before i start a podcast or vice versa.
Overcast. It's well designed for the most part and doesn't try and centralise and monopolise the podcast space, unlike some of its competitors.
I've been using Spotify for a while now, although I've never really explored other options. It seems to have a lot of my favourite podcasts on (dude soup, rooster teeth, always open, filthy casuals, hackable and no such thing as a fish)
