Hello there, brand-new user.
Before you start posting more one-line jokes like this, I recommend you read through some of the topics in ~tildes and ~tildes.official, to get an idea of what sort of posts and content people expect here.
I've only had to post it once so far! We already have too many groups for a small community like this (some groups are nearly empty). We may not want to encourage joke posts at all (which creating...

We may not want to encourage joke posts at all (which creating ~jokes or ~talk.jokes would do).
I think it would help if it was a good joke with some effort put into it and not a boring one liner about OP's sexual preferences. As it stands, this is a pretty low quality post

I feel like upvotes can be used for a different purpose depending on the content posted. An interesting discussion starter, question or external link should be upvoted if it is well presented, logically thought out and thought-provoking. For more casual posts such as jokes, music and videos I think the upvote should be used if the content linked is enjoyable and well-made.
The joke @TeaBagTwat made (lovely username by the way) was not exactly thought-provoking in anyway but did make me chuckle a bit and therefore in my eyes deserve an upvote; it achieved its intended purpose. I hope that tildes will continued to be mainly discussion based, but I also want to see enjoyable content now and again as long as it's posted in the correct tilde.

I agree, but the problem is when the post "bubbling up" feature is implemented, if the bar regarding voting is so low for some content, fast-processed content like jokes will get many more votes than some other thing that needs 5-10 minutes to read/watch/discuss.
I think maybe there could be different thresholds for some groups. Like, the jokes group might need many more votes to bubble up than other groups. Or maybe not bubble up at all even.
Edit: Even now, if a user sorts by most votes, fast-consumption content will probably get higher than good discussions, even if just because of the fact that it takes so little to give a vote (in terms of time to evaluate content and in terms of standards: like "this made me chuckle").

I wouldn't recommend Voat, that place is a cesspool. notabug has a significantly better community and I love how stubbornly censorship-resistant @go1dfish has made it... but the proof-of-work aspect makes it for very unpleasant UX (long load times and CPU drain). I haven't used Dread.
I really don't see why it matters what Tildes is "going for" in this situation. A dedicated group for jokes would allow those who want to see them to so do, and those who don't to filter them out.
I understand the broader desire to build a mature community of quality content. If I were supreme dictator I would interpret that to mean discouraging various misanthropies like trolling, bullying, and bigotry. But jokes? What's the problem exactly?

It seems to me many people on this site are confusing "quality content" for "content that I like and want to see". The filtering features, when implemented, will let anyone who doesn't want to see jokes (how boring), filter out ~talk.jokes or whatever the appropriate tag ends up being. No reason to throw a fit every time a joke is posted, which only serves to give the joke thread more activity and attention.

Not necessarily a bad thing. Humour is subjective, I laughed. But yeah agreed, this isn’t the kind of content that should be on ~talk. Luckily, OP already made a thread discussing this.
it’s in extremely poor taste

And I wholly recognize that is going to sound cheap and sound-bitey, so let me expand. Power structures being what they are, it's generally better to make fun of the powerful than those who are already vulnerable. You can make punching the poor or punching babies your shtick, but it will tend to make people think you're an unmitigated asshole. And maybe you would be.

EDIT: typo
I think it would be easier and better to have ~jokes instead of having to post that message every time a new user posts a joke.
I've only had to post it once so far!
We already have too many groups for a small community like this (some groups are nearly empty).
We may not want to encourage joke posts at all (which creating ~jokes or ~talk.jokes would do).
Meh. Jokes do no harm when posted to the right group. Fighting users will lead to overmoderation and a bad atmosphere like Stack Overflow.
I think it would help if it was a good joke with some effort put into it and not a boring one liner about OP's sexual preferences. As it stands, this is a pretty low quality post
Exactly what I’m thinking. This is a low effort joke we’ve all heard in some form.
Oh, I absolutely agree that the joke sucks. But that's what the problem is, not the fact that it's a joke.

I agree with you there, there would need to be some balancing between different types of posts, assuming ~jokes would even become an actual tilde.
If there's ever ~jokes filter it out from the rest of the site.

I agree with this, and feel like ~talk.jokes would be an appropriate compromise
I hate /r/prequelmemes with a burning passion.
What a stale and repetitive community.
I have a few useful regex filters in RES that helps get rid of that type of thing:
/(meme)/i
/(the_)/i
/(_irl)/i
These help cut back on the massive amount of memes on reddit, if you don't like that sort of thing.
I could use that to block all the repetitive one liners. Thank you!
So don't subscribe? And on Tildes, you'll be able to go a step further and filter out any tags you don't want to see.
yeah, but prequelmemes is possibly the leakiest subreddit there is. For a few months, at least, there wasn't a single front-page Reddit topic that didn't have "it's treason, then" or "hello, there" or "a surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one" or any of the other garbage lines that kicks off a 20-comment circlejerk
Yeah, sorry. I got on a tangential rant.
All good. I definitely understand the frustration of half of the front page being meta circle jerking
On tildes.
On Reddit, I just have to swallow it.
I kind of wish we had a downvote button for this. Not only is it a one line joke, it's in extremely poor taste.
Not necessarily a bad thing. Humour is subjective, I laughed.
But yeah agreed, this isn’t the kind of content that should be on ~talk. Luckily, OP already made a thread discussing this.
Ableism is bad. Period.
It's. A. Joke.
Setting aside my personal beliefs on 'ableism,' I don't even see how this could classify as that.
So it's totally cool for me to make lynching jokes then, right, cause it's just a joke man lighten up! Right?
No. Of course not.
Yes. It is okay for you to make lynching jokes.
There are no sacred cows in comedy.
Absolutely. However, there are going to be cross-sections of people who feel put down by various punchlines, and in general it's better to punch up than down.

Thankfully, I can definitely appreciate a good joke at the expense of the rich and powerful. But who can they punch up to...?
I'm already in this thread, discussing this.
dont you get it, this place is serious business only!
more stiffs than a morgue
Seriously, the joke sucks and it's not in good taste but the reaction of everyone makes me question what type of community this is intended to be.
A community which "prioritizes quality content and discussion", and where "in-depth content is the most important".
yeah, isnt that the default motto of every PHPBB installed, ever? oh, prolly just most of them
but yeah, this time it will be different!
The culture here certainly won't be different if we don't do anything differently to what we've done before.
im not here for a cultural upgrade. im here for a technical downgrade.
Well... you might be in the wrong place.
