So posting this here, because it's not really all that newsworthy.
Here's the response from her spokesperson when asked if the FLOTUS watched any of the media reports about the tape of POTUS talking about paying off the Playmate:
Ok so what REALLY stuck out for me is this line:
Especially this:
WTF is that about? How controlled is Melania that her spokeperson needs to clarify that she can watch any TV channel she wants to? That's like something a child would say... "My dad let's me watch any channel I want!"
Is this a response to some meme or some report going around that she cannot watch what she wants?
It's a response to this story that came out last night: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/24/us/politics/trump-putin-cnn.html
Ah-ha! Thank you. That's the context that was missing.
This sounds a lot like the fallacy of relative privation (appeal to worse problems / not as bad as) used as a deflection.
Oh it certainly is, and it's a tired response used by bad actors and enablers when their actions are called out.
Interesting, I didn't know there was a term for this. Here is some more information about it in case anyone else was intrigued.
That made me laugh. Thanks!
