I have a coworker that freaks out over every single project. He presents pretty much everything like it's some dire emergency that must be done Right Now, when in reality this has never once actually been the case. I'm just venting here because he is really stressing me out today.
This used to kind of be me!
I was really bonkers about meeting every single deadline, even if they were self-imposed, until finally one day my boss was like "good lord, what will happen if we don't meet this deadline for this ONE THING, will someone DIE!??" and then I really assessed my over the top reaction to the situation and have effectively cooled it! (I do not work in an industry where we could cause anyone to die in any way.)
Oh man, I'm glad you were able to relax! For as much as my coworker stresses me out when he gets like this, I can only imagine how much he stresses himself out, getting so worked up over every minor thing :(
That's too much. Work is work enough without adding in the work of dealing with someone who makes everything frantic. Frantic work is how mistakes happen. Last time I had to work on a job like that, I ended up burying a bunch of splinters under my fingernail because I was rushing things. It happened right after I was explaining to someone how much I hated that frantic feeling because injuries become more likely. Ugh. Such an awful concoction of emotions from that.
I've been playing God of War and got to the part where the son becomes whiny and petulant. It was really infuriating and aggravating. Made me realize that I'm a ways off from being ready to be a parent.
As a parent, I absolutely hate when my kids are whiny and petulant. When they were younger I would just record them and then play it back so they could see and hear themselves. That used to piss them off so much, but really helped stop it
... if I was gonna have kids, I'd so steal this and use it. That's hilarious.
It’s kinda like throwing ranty copypasta at kids that come whining to modmail.
I've been thinking about doing this to my neices and nephews. I have an h4n (portable stereo recorder) that gets some pretty decent quality. I could make a whole podcast for them if I could stand to be around them when they're like that. I usually just duck out as quickly as possible. Makes me feel completely unhinged, like trying to chew on chaulk and bone while being attacked by a swarm of bees.
But if it works, it could be worth the effort.
I just used my cell phone camera. It takes a while for it to work if they are still young. Now that they are older, when I do it, I can send it to their phones as well. That way their sibling gets access and they have all the same friends on social media
When my 17 year old is being obnoxious, I would take her phone and post embarrassing dad things to her snap story.
No other punishments would work, she thought she outsmarted me because her friends could keep her streaks going. I showed her :)
They really drag it out for longer than it needs to be, honestly to the point where it feels somewhat unrealistic. Luckily it's not forever.
Yeah, I'm past it now thankfully. He has learned his lesson.
Just found out I am being classified as overqualified for the job I wanted and won’t be considered for the position.
At least it’s Friday and I have a full case of beer.
Oh, that sucks. Not the beer, I mean.
Good luck next time!
Thanks, zoec! I’m sure there’s a good reason for not wanting to hire overqualified candidates for job. I mean there better be 🤬!
My wife left at 5:30 to go to a training seminar for the weekend and as soon as my daughter wakes up I’m going to drop both kids at my mom’s for a week long trip out of state. My son is currently trying to teach me fortnite so I can try to get some challenges for him while he’s gone. Most likely, I’ll just be at work trying to catch up though
This is heartwarming and hilarious at the same time.
It’s funny how frustrated he gets at how horrible I am, yet I just finished a challenge for him to shoot clay pigeons cause he can’t stand still and shoot.
I wouldn't consider myself an anxious person in general, but for some reason, the possibility of being dressed inappropriately for an event makes me feel super stressed.
I have wasted a bunch of time today searching google photos and instagram hashtags in an effort to see how other people have dressed for a venue I'm going to tomorrow. This is simultaneously making me feel better and also kind of awful about indulging my neuroses - like, just relax, dude.
Ha me too! I have an event tonight and due to some weight gain don't fit most of my dresses. I still have no idea what I'm going to wear. I spent the morning organizing my closet in hopes of finding something.
It's FRIDAY bitches!
I'm taking off at lunchtime to run some errands, then hit up my favourite restaurant for lunch, followed by some shopping for a small get together I'm having tomorrow. Then Sunday I'm off to Toronto for the night to see a show. Should be a good weekend!
Watchig the Expanse, it's incredibly distracting to hear the UN talk about attacking Deimos...
I can tell you're likely not from the U.S. because of the date format you used, which is mildly interesting.
Good guess. Canada.
2018/07/27 or bust!
Please, if you're gonna format it like that, use proper ISO 8601: 2018-07-27.

I’m trying to work out the details of a retro gaming setup that uses RGB instead of RCA or s-video. Right now, all my consoles—SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, and PS1/2—use either RCA or s-video, but the allure of using an HDTV upscaler for RGB is too much to ignore. Anyone have experience with this? Is it worth the trouble? S-video is already a big difference from RCA. I don’t think my wife will allow a clunky CRT or RGB monitor in my den, so truly authentic RGB signal is probably out of the question for now.
would RCA->VGA->HDMI work?
It's a bit more complex than that (I think).
Writing emails explaining simple matters to French colleagues remained a head-scratching experience for me. My command of the language only allowed me to write something "well-formed" in the sense of, let's say, parseable as legit text rather than gibberish. They still looked much like things from a contrived textbook exercise instead of what people would just write.
I received messages from a friend. They wrote about their recovery from depression. I could sense quite a new vibe from them and I felt happy about that.
I was generally able to sooth myself, more or less. Oh, and I like this place, this thread. Isn't it great, we listen and be listened to?
(first post here!)
Just came out of a Skype meeting that killed all the positive vibe I was carrying this week. It sucks that in a group that's supposed to be of volunteers trying to improve a situation there is so much ego and condescendence for other opinions. Ugh.
Anyway, I'm excited to contribute some code to tildes! My experience is more in computational science but I want to get better as a developer. Anybody in a similar path?
Welcome to Tildes!
I guess I could claim I'm on a similar path going in the other direction. Done a bunch of web stuff but forgotten all python and never used this stack before. :)
I recently tried watching Silicon Valley and didn't make it past episode 2. I wanted to give it a shot but TJ Miller's character was just annoying me too much. I get the main character is supposed to be some awkward genius but the fact that he was unable to realize how much TJ's character was trying to exploit him really got on my nerves. Should I push through and watch some more?
I personally really like the show, I enjoy the jokes. But I don't think those characters change much in that sense. I think it's worth watching more than two episodes though!
I remember the first season being really rough at points. IIRC, it picks up as the season progresses, and becomes a much stronger show (both narratively and comedically) by the season finale.
The last two episodes in particular I remember as outstanding.
After that, seasons 2 and 3 are excellent in my opinion. I haven’t gotten around to watching all of season 4 yet, but I’ll definitely co-sign your recommendation for Meghan to give it a couple more episodes!
The Richard-Erlich dynamic is at times one of the most aggravating elements of the show, and at others absolutely hilarious. The rest of the cast are much more consistently amusing, in my opinion, and I think that’s something the show runners figure out as they go along.
