I will be in Detroit shooting an interview for a documentary about the beginnings of criminal pathology in the United States by following the life of one of its founders: Russell Fisher.
Oh, God—that is pretty cool. A good documentary's always fantastic.
I just sort of fell into making them. Like most film students, I dreamed of being the next Kubrick or Aronofsky or whatever. I liked documentaries, Errol Morris is a hero of mine, and I took a single semester of documentary filmmaking. But, there aren't a lot of jobs for film in the midwest for me to rise up through. I got a job at local TV station straight out of college while I was making up my mind on what to do with myself. Ended up being promoted to shooter in a few months and then did really well in the awards season. My resume starts to become someone that does non-fiction filmmaking well and now that's pretty much all I do when it's not commercials or political ads.
I'm in the process of knitting a wool, slouchy, seed-stitch hat for myself. Should be done by the time the weather turns cold.
ooo is there a pattern for this online you can link?
It says "gal" hat, but it's really unisex, especially with the colors I'm using (mainly brown but a mix of a bunch of colors).

Ooh! I've always wanted to get into knitting! It seems so zen! How'd you get into it?
I originally got into knitting as a follow up to crocheting. Sometimes I'd find myself wanting to make knit things that crochet just wasn't a suitable technique for. I originally got into crocheting as something to keep my hands busy and make me feel productive while watching tv or listening to audiobooks.
Both of them I just learned via youtube. A few simple tools and a skein of yarn and you can be on your way with just trying. I occasionally posted little things to the knitting or crochet subreddits which resulted in feedback for things I might be doing wrong. Other than that, I just kept researching to find ways to do what I wanted to get done. Ravelry is a great site with patterns, forums, and a whole database of information (pattern difficulty, yardage, satisfaction, etc.) that makes it easy to find and filter whatever you want. Once I got good with the basics, I just kept expanding. It can be anywhere from mindless hand movements to actively thinking about each stitch.
Mainly youtube, my girlfriend does a lot of knitting, and even spinning her own yarn.
I was crocheting a few years back, but I fell out of it because I was mainly doing stuffed toys for people's kids, but they were all people I knew through my ex and when we broke up I didn't have anyone to make things for any more.
That sounds so fun!
And sorry to hear that.
Meh. It was never the right relationship for me to begin with and I'm in a much better one now.
I got into it because I wanted something to do with my hands while watching movies or listening to music. It means I can't do anything too complicated since I'm not focusing on it 100%, but I've made some scarves and hats I'm happy with.
I recently did a cabled dishcloth just to try cabling. No way could I have any disractions when I was making that.
Did you get your hat done before the cold?
I got into doing Koolhaas hats for a while but I found it pretty grueling, they do look great though!
Yeah. I keep meaning to take a picture of it to post on r/knitting and ravelry. I'll respond again with a link when I do.
That sounds cute!! I really like the look of seed stitch. I need to get started on some knitting projects myself.
Fanfic for a gift exchange. No details since it's Secret Santa-style, but I can divulge that it's femslash (since that's the theme of the exchange).
Fun!
My puppy ate the stairs again so I get to spend the weekend refixing what I've already fixed once. I think the rest of the weekend is just going to be spent at the beach or pool and BBQing, but my wife probably will let me know otherwise.
D'awww; aren't dogs just the best!? I bet it'll enjoy the barbecue, too!
A 24 port switch died. I'll have to resurrect it by replacing three electrolytic capacitors
Here's the how-to fix comments provided by an extremely helpful Amazon reviewer.

Now that's gonna be fun! Ever done that before?
Yes, I successfully resurrected a Zylex switch previously by replacing two or three of its capacitors on the power supply board. I bought 20 capacitors know that I would be facing this problem again. I equated capacitors to the switch as tires are to a car. If a tire goes bad, you don't junk the car. Instead, you replace the tire.
Having said that, I opened the case last night and I could not discern any blown capacitors on the power supply. Since the power indicator remains off and nothing else lights up, I'm certain the problem lies at the small power supply board.
Ooh, board game project? Are you making one, or collecting them?
Oh my God that sounds awesome! I really hope you find a tonne of success with it!
Building a new desk, and re-doing my home office setup.
So much cabling...
So tedious, but the payoff is so satisfying!
I'm hoping to finish the quilt I've been working on! It's the first quilting/sewing project I've attempted and I'm really excited about it :)
I would be too! I wanna make a quilt someday—they can be so cool of artifacts and heirlooms (and of course, blankets!)
Can you share how yours turns out?
Heck yeah I'll share when it's done :D It's been a really fun experience making it too. The measuring and cutting and sewing was really zen. I'm already planning my next project lol
Great! Thank you!
Also, nice on planning another!
Building shelving and some racks with unistrut in my garage.
What's unistrut?
It's metal channel (can come in steel, stainless, probably more than that) that you use in commercial construction to keep things in place or build structures.

The stairs over the piping in that picture is built out of unistrut.
Oh, that's cool!
I may or may not finish an incomplete historical poem.
I hope you did!
I couldn't write it then. I was in a block.
Well, we have a dehumidifier that stopped dehumidifying this week, so after looking at what the potential problems could be, we decided the most likely one is that the capacitor inside it has died. Tomorrow we'll order a new one with the same dimensions/ uF rating and I'll install it, which should hopefully get it working again. If it doesn't work we'll have to look at the other potential issues :/
Really hope it works for you this time, and hopefully for a long time!
Oh my God, that sounds fun! Then again, my view of car trips is a bit unfairly romanticized by John Darnielle's writing, I guess. Hope you have fun!
Need to sit down and actually edit some short stories I've been sitting on for a while. It's never fun to read your first drafts, so many "oh god what was I thinking?" moments. I'll probably go on a hike tomorrow.
I'm creating a world for the sci-fi novel I wanna write in the next 12 months. It involves mind to mind upload with similar aspects to the Star Trek "mind meld", political turbulence and the effects of climate change in Brazil by the year 2400. It's surprising (to me) how hard it is to get predictions on how climate change is going to affect specific parts of the world, like my hometown, where the book takes place. But I'm guessing that Canada is going to be a superpower with all the green land they'll get, and Brazil will be devastated: flooded on the coast, desertic on the interior.
That's actually a really cool book idea; have you been thinking about it for a while?
I had this idea about two months ago, but it is mostly based on a vivid dream I had years ago, where I woke up and saw that the sea had raised to the bedroom window of my apartment. It was beautiful, poetic, and terrifying. It was shortly after that first big tsunami. After that, I gained the habit of imagining how several places in my city would look like if we were hit by a tsunami. Just for fun (I'm not a psychopath, please don't judge me! :P). I majored in film 8 years ago, and since then I focused on writing screenplays. But screenwriting is not very rewarding, because a screenplay is not a literary piece made to be read by itself, it is made to be shot. And very few screenplays actually get shot. So I decided to write a book instead. This has many advantages, including:
readers.
Drawing a lot. Mostly my own characters but doing some freebies as well. I've also been sketching up some scenes for a project my SO is working on!
That's awesome!
I'm working on a Lego (The huuuge Millennium Falcon), and also touching up my custom-built Gameboy Advance (does that still count as computer/programming?).
That's really really cool!
I've decided that imma dip my toes in the mastodon bot dev process. Got an idea for a bot I wanna make, so now its time to see how woefully overcomplicated the process will be.
In other news; I think im finally getting the hang of mastodon. I never really used twitter so its a doubly steep learning curve rn
It's just handling json, isn't it?
Yeah, but I'm quite rusty and even at the best of times I haven't gotten my hands that dirty yet to handle the api directly.
So i'm using https://godoc.org/github.com/mattn/go-mastodon this library to make my counting bot. There's some things missing apparently. Like i can't see any funcs for changing the meta tags on a profile, but I guess after I get the rough shape of my bot ironed out I can start doing some direct api to update that part of the profile
In true Petersonian fashion, I cleaned my room. This involved:
It took a long time.
Good job, bucko!
