Introductions #6 - It's been a while since the last one. How's everyone doing?

Lots of new people coming in today, and there will be lots in the next couple of days... the last Introductions post was months ago, we're overdue for another one. Drop in, say hi, tell us whatever you like about yourself, even if it's just how your day is going. On Tildes, ~talk is the casual space, so don't feel pressured to be clever or anything. :P

Past introduction threads for everyone to catch up: -1- . -2- . -3- . -4- . -5-

Also in case anyone missed it, there's an intro to tildes post to help bring you up to speed on this place.

Recently tildes came up in an HN comment (I originally read about it when it was announced) and I thought I might as well just request an invite on Reddit and see how it goes. Joined today and still finding my footing :)

The only reason it's not on by default is because it requires storing some extra data about your usage of the site, and under Privacy by Design, that means it should be opt-in.

I think it's because you have to click "sidebar", then the username (which has no indication of being clickable) and then "sidebar" again. I think you should change this, especially since a lot of important stuff is hidden in there!

I hear Dracula is actually better, that's one our users created that's part of Tildes Extended. TEx is like a baby reddit enhancement suite. At some point though, the site will support user-created skins, so people will be able to contribute and share styles. I imagine when we get around to letting communities do custom CSS there will be themes there too, should help take some of the pain out of the process and give the users here with webdev skills the opportunity to make some kickass contributions.

Have you figured out how to get code completion for ES within Webstorm (or whatever IDE you use, please tell me you aren't using Adobe's ExtendScript toolkit)? Without it, I'd probably die.

Hahaha, I use Visual Studio and the Adobe Extendscript IDE thingy, it's pretty terrible :D. I haven't figured out proper code completion in VS and in the Adobe Toolkit thing it's really bad too. I use the object class viewer or what it's called (on F1 I think) in the Adobe ES thingkit quite a lot, because there's like no help on the internet for ExtendScript most of the time. I like how by default the ES IDE has a non monospaced font and has different font sizes for commented lines. Pretty great design.

I have a bunch of files I downloaded somewhere when I started working with it that contain stubs of all the ExtendScript API (I think someone on the official forums had a tool to generate them). You should be able to just drop them into a lib folder in your project and VS should pick it up. In Webstorm you also have the option of having the files somewhere else and add them as a global library. I can zip them and send them to you if you want.

Hi, fellow (almost) CS student from Czechia here!

Where do you study? I still have some time before I go to university, and I have no idea where should I go, so I try to complete as many competitions as possible inbetween (so I won't have to do entry exams :P). ČVUT looks great me so far.

I just started learning Rust yesterday for some reason, and so far it feels very weird and unintuitive - hopefully that means it'll be fun later!

Hey, cool to see more Czech people here :). I study at FI MUNI, mostly because I live really close to Brno and for programming there's only VUT as the second option here. I am starting just the second semester next week so I can't speak for all of the course, but so far it wasn't too bad. One of my previous teachers recommended me to go to Prague to study at Karlova Univerzita, according to him it's the best CS course here in Czechia, but I don't know myself :).

And yeah not doing entry exams is a pretty good strategy, even if I had to do them in the end :D, because Matematika+ was after the entry exams, but in the end I passed both the entry exams and Matematika+. I don't know if you can do Mat+ at ČVUT instead of the entry exams, but if you can, do it, because it's pretty easy :).

    Hi,

I've been on reddit for a few long years by now, on HN for about a year or so (Anniversary! Yay?).

I'm currently writing my bachelor thesis for CS in germany, I'm personally always interested in people who want to improve the internet so I was rather interested when I heard of tildes. Due to various recent events I was looking for some option to selfhost a reddit alternative as well as an alternative to the HN and Reddit Community Circles, so I think this place fits.

Personally I'm doing fairly well although worktime has been eating into "time for personal projects", had not much time for them lately.

Left Reddit a while ago and was just on HackerNews and SlowTwitch (old school style Triathlon Forum). Big fan of virtue ethics although I believe they are heuristic optimization techniques and tend to frame stuff from an existential view when considering longer term decisions. A big part of the reason why I like virtue ethics is it meshes well with my career (full time + consulting) and sport (triathlon) which require optimizing a lot of my time. While this helps keep me applied and busy I've been wondering lately if I am missing out from other things by not being able to be as "chill" as others. Would love to have a discussion about meshing views of Stoicism/Epicurean/Aristotelian/Buddhism with a modern lifestyle -- I feel a lot of the time it is hard to divorce there views from how they would impact my career/hobby which seem to have an underlying capitalist incentive. Even Buddhism, the philosophy I have spent the most time with (born and raised in a Buddhist family) seems to of been cherry-picked to help us with our everyday social lives for example I've found as I get older the idea of wanting less has often transitioned to wanting luxury goods or BIFL (buy it for life) items. Is this really wanting less? I own less at higher quality but I still derive pleasure/attachment from the fact that what I own is a luxury good (for example, a metal strainer vs a plastic strainer).

Anyways just a train of thought... I enjoy reading others views and flows of thought so PM if you'd like to engage in a discussion of how personal success can avoid turning into a rat-race.

I am not a practicing Buddhist like yourself, but do practice daily Zazen meditation and have studied Buddhism rather extensively, largely agree with many of the fundamental principles and do try to live by them as best I can. I think if you were truly serious about the religious aspects, e.g. attaining "enlightenment" (if such a thing is even truly possible), then that would undeniable still be viewed as holding on to attachment derived from craving, which is what leads to suffering. However from my more practical perspective, i.e. using the ethics and lessons of Buddhism to better your life without sacrificing its quality, I think switching to BIFL is definitely a giant step in the right direction and one that we could all really benefit from adopting, not just personally but as a species. Planned obsolescence, novelty items and a quantity over quality attitude is wreaking absolute havoc on our environment, and if the worst climate change predictions are true, may have already doomed us. :/

I tried to make a social networking protocol that could be used to generate any kind of social networking site http://www.babblingbrook.net was the theory site. http://cobaltcascade.net/ was the reddit themed version. It is still online, but I havn't touched it in almost 5 years and the designs are about 8 years old... so don't expect it to look like much, but if you sign up you will see it has lots features to enable community control, such as users being able to create their own algorithms for sorting results.

Hey! Been a member for about a week after I saw mention of Tildes in a Hacker News discussion. I've been growing tired of reddit's trend towards pictures and gifs (especially since the redd.it domain for images gets blocked by my firewall at work), and wanted to seek out longer form articles and discussion. Granted there's still good subs on reddit for this, but the front page of Tildes is already so much closer to what I want in a community of this sort.
I'm in IT support by trade, but the dream is to become a pro musician. Slow-going thus far, but getting there!

Getting to be pro is a pipe dream essentially, though I would consider making a living from teaching music to be pro as well, and that's far more achievable!

Pretty much anything but country, but mostly rock/blues and acoustic stuff (Neil Young, CS&N, a little Dylan, Beatles, etc.) I'm an old man now at 51, so my influences are a bit dated, but that's what I like to play. Banjo is for bluegrass three-finger style, and a little clawhammer. I'm really rusty on the banjo though; it's been about five years since I've played with any regularity. I'd love to be super proficient at bluegrass, but it's not easy to get fast. Just takes tons of practice, for which I have little time.

So you read music? That's one thing I never learned to do starting with guitar as basically a hobby and being mostly self-taught.

Hi all. I just got my invitation and joined yesterday! I've been a redditor (under a different name) for the last 8-9yrs and mod some smaller, US state politics subs. I stumbled onto Tildes from reddit a few months ago, and nearly forgot about it until an invitation thread popped up on my frontpage the other day!

In the real world, I work as an "IT Generalist" from Kansas City, MO, USA. My interests are in politics and news, gaming, technology, and travel.

I've had an opportunity to try other, similar sites like Imzy and Voat, so I'm exited see to how Tildes develops and how it can differentiate itself from those and ofc, reddit.

    Edit: Missing words.

Like most of you I'm sure, I am yet another Redditor who is in search truly open, respectful discussions. I'm a huge information sponge, but I've never felt very comfortable engaging in most Reddit discussion. I hope that can be different here!

Nothing too special about me. Just a guy in his mid-twenties trying to do well in the world, support his family of one fiance, one dog, and a bunch of rats. I work for a non-profit that provides day-habilitation, housing, and employment opportunities and supports for the disabled members of my community.

I'm what you'd call a Job Coach. I provide transportation, assist with work tasks, and facilitate conversation with co-workers, management, and customers of various business that my clients work for. It's a strange, crazy job, and it sure doesn't make me rich, but it's an honest way to live. The benefits are very nice at least, and that's a blessing in this world.

Anyway, I hope to get to know you all.

11 year reddit user, 5 year HN user, found Tildes via a HN comment chain.

I'm a software dev in Virginia (USA), and patiently awaiting the userbase to expand enough for ~cars to exist. I had been dreaming up investorless, privacy-oriented social networks a couple weeks before I found Tildes, so naturally I was pretty mindblown to find it all developed and in a stage of growth. I'm a little hesitant with Tildes' approach to moderation/banning, but we'll see how it pans out in the long run. There's pros and cons.

    Hiya ~,

Also a long time HNer, have lurked on reddit for many, many years. HN thread actually led me to ~, and I am quite pleased to be a part of the community here. I studied mathematics and philosophy, worked for years in various software engineering verticals, and have stumbled my way into being a faceless executive of the conglomerate of evil. I like to think I'm a bit of a rat in the opera house, though I fear that is an empty, romantic notion.

I live and work in the northeastern United States, though I've seen much of the world during military service in my youth. I worked in various startups after getting out of the service, ended up going corporate due to the practical economic reality of having a family. I'm drawn to online communities primarily to interact with and read perspectives from people who live outside of the bubble that my life tends to take place in. Reddit/HN each had +/- aspects for me--after learning about Deimos' views on how to conduct the ~ project, I jumped at the chance to join it!

    Hello everyone~

I was previously a Redditor for 9 years and slowly as we all knew the old good discussions that made Reddit great disappeared little by little over the years. At first it just moved to smaller subreddit but recently it seems to all but vanished along with some questionable things that have been happening recently on the platform.

I have only been here for a few minutes and I already feel at home. This is the new home that I have been searching for since the failed exodus to voat turned into an awful place so I quickly went back to Reddit.

Thank you everyone and I hope that we all can have great discussions for as long as possible until we have to once again find a new home.

Edit: I'll be hanging out in everything from D&D to Anime, Tech, and Games.

Hi; nice to meet folks. I remember hearing about this site quite a while back and I finally got around to requesting an invitation the other day. I had been on Reddit for a long time and initially enjoyed it; but for a while now I have disliked the direction of its community and design and I have been looking for an alternative.

I am also a prolific lurker on MetaFilter! The AskMetaFilter section of the site was actually a direct inspiration for AskReddit, although the two went in very different directions. MetaFilter is good, I think, but I wanted something a bit more open to general chattiness.

Like most of us I am also a software engineer! I have been working in software for eight years and programming for about fifteen. I live in Canada with my girlfriend, three cats, and golden retriever. :)

There are so many techies here. Couple thousand from hacker news, and Tildes made the rounds in the linux/open source subreddits when the code went open which brought in a ton more from reddit. Just yesterday we had a lot of people show up from /r/tech. This place is stewing in STEM graduates. Most internet sites start off like that but I think we drew more than our fair share.

We definitely have developer horsepower on this site in spades. Tildes source code is right here on Gitlab for them to play with. Not all donations have to be cash. ;)

Lately, I've been delving into D&D and seeing if that turns into the next foundation for a narrative of some sort.
