Jet Set Radio (called Jet Grind Radio in the US) was the hippest game to ever come out. Ever.

It was oozing with (post-)90s sensibilities and a self-identity entirely its own. Brand new, never before seen art style? Check. Funky fresh original soundtrack? Check. Fuck-the-police attitude conveyed through the anarchistic act of... rollerblading? Sure, JSR. Go for it. You do 90s you.

The game came out in the waning days of the Dreamcast, so it was beloved and revered by the, oh, twelve or so people who were still buying Dreamcast games in late 2000. It quickly became a cult classic and went on to have an equally funky yet slightly less fresh sequel on the Xbox.

To this day those games have gone unmatched in terms of unique identity and presentation, and the linked site is an attempt to recapture some of that wonderful goodness. It's got radio stations where you can listen to the games' soundtracks, as well as other newer songs that fit JSR's zeitgeist. You can also watch videos of the games, chat with other JSR fans, graffiti up a wall, follow fan projects, etc. The whole site is a spot-on recreation of what JSR felt like at the time, nearly twenty years later. It's a fun, well-executed fan site that succeeds at sustaining the very thing it's trying to honor.

I've been humming the bassline for years as well! Hideki Naganuma is an absolute legend. If this kind of music is your thing, it's also worth checking out his Sonic Rush soundtrack. If you listened to it without knowing it was from a Sonic game, you'd assume it was from a third JSR game. In my headcanon, Naganuma was intending most of these songs for a new JSR release and instead repurposed them for Sonic after JSR fizzled out.

Fun fact: the reason why it was retired as Jet Grind Radio in the US was to avoid naming conflict with Jet Set Men, a gay porn studio. There is a chance this is just hearsay, but I want it to be true.

It's been years since my last visit, and I can still quote most of it word for word, intonation and all. Truly iconic.

I'd recommend anyone get to Arc 8 or so before making a decision on whether or not they like it.

Here is a cabinet of sound curiosities, ever moving, to discover the vitality of international radio creation, to dive into and indulge in natural and supernatural sounds. Make way for nature’s cheeky creativity, magnified by the phauna hook that turns every hour, every minute, every second into a given instinct, received and shared – in a burst of laugh, from deep within our guts.

i have a couple of nifty little sites like this:

    • Fakena.me: does exactly what it says on the tin, generates a fake name and associated info
    • Musical Chord Progression Arpeggiator: also does exactly what it says, is neat to play around with
    • ColorHexa: one of those color picker websites that shows you all the colors there are, particularly neat because it shows you what it looks like as a font color and a background color but also what it looks like to colorblind people
    • Radiooooo: radiooooo is probably known to some of you, but for those of you who don't know what it is, it allows you to listen to music by country and by decade; the website is also a community effort and you can contribute to it

Problem Sleuth, the extremely ambitious MS Paint Adventure by Andrew Hussie. It's presented as an old-school PC adventure game with text input. Whenever a page was posted, readers would suggest the next "command" to run. Andrew would then pick his favorite from the suggestions and draw/narrate the result. It produced a hilarious, sprawling epic far more amazing than it had any right to be.

Then, after that story concluded, he went and did it all again with Homestuck. Which was more than quadruple the size and scope of Problem Sleuth, bigger and crazier in every possible way. I never finished reading Homestuck but I'm blown away by Andrew's commitment and attention to detail. Both are truly artistic feats.

He also made some shorter adventures earlier on but I recommend you start with PS.
