Has anyone used platforms like Fiverr to make a bit of extra money?

In these lean COVID-19 times I feel like a lot of people are trying to make a bit of extra cash. I've been thinking about trying out some freelancing platform to market a few of my skills (apparently people pay for at least few things I do for fun?), and I was wondering what people who've used any of the main platforms think of them. I keep seeing conflicting stuff around the web.

I would read up on Fiverr if I were you. I've not used it, but I have read that they've really gone downhill in recent years. Last I heard they were trying to force everyone who did contract work through them to install an app that takes a screenshot of your screen every few minutes as you're working so they can prove that you're working on that particular client's project. I understand the need to protect clients from fraud, but that's taking it a bit far, in my opinion. (What if you're working on 2 different clients projects? Can 1 client see the work you've done for another client if you accidentally open the wrong folder at the wrong time? Sounds sketchy to me!)

My understanding is that they also have a history of either not paying people after both parties have agreed the work is done, or always siding with the client, even when you can show that the work is done as specified. Again, this is just what I've read on places like HackerNews and reddit, so take it with a grain of salt, but definitely look into it before jumping in.

I tried that for about a month. The only messages I received were from bots trying to get me to chat with someone off-Fiverr (which is very much against the rules of the platform because then Fiverr can't guarantee payment for finished work: you would've been communicating outside their oversight authority).
