The Tildes' Make Something Month (Timasomo) 2021 Reflection Thread

The Showcase has now been live for a week, and I'm thrilled with all the incredible projects that got completed this year! Congratulations to all participants!

While the experience is fresh, I want to gather some feedback for next year's Timasomo. Use this thread to identify:

  • Positives
  • Negatives
  • Tweaks
  • Suggestions

Basically, what should we keep the same for next year, and what should we change? Feedback is welcome from anyone, but in particular I'm interested in hearing from Timasomo participants.

Also, I put this out there last year and I'll put it out again this year: if anyone is interested in running Timasomo for 2022, please let me know! While I'm happy to run it and can certainly do it again next year, I do think it's important for events like this to have community ownership and not be dependent on one particular user. I think it is more sustainable for the community if there is a sense of distributed/shared responsibility. Thus, if you have any interest in managing the event, please let me know either here or by PM.

I would like to re-open a conversation we started last year: should we move Timasomo to October instead of November? I'll post my own thoughts in a reply below to keep this top question neutral,...

I'll post my own thoughts in a reply below to keep this top question neutral, but feel free to let me know whether you think we need to shift its timing.

I agree with the points from the previous thread. October tends to be less busy than November. In addition, since this year I was making something that was going to be a Xmas gift it would be nice to have that extra month to work on it after the Timasomo part push is through.

For example, right now I'm making a nice wood box to place the replica prop I made in. I think I'll get it done, but there are several other things I've now been inspired/motivate to do as Xmas gifts, and I'm feeling some scheduling pressure!

I am still pro October personally. This year going Timasomo -> Thanksgiving -> Advent of Code AND wrapping up work -> Christmas is wearing me out!

I, again, agree that October would be my preference. Both due to holiday commitments and next year also being a 5 weekend month.

As for my own thoughts on this, I’m leaning towards October as well. Not only does it give Timasomo a bit more of its own identity separate from NaNoWriMo, but this year really drove home how busy November is for me.

Outside of the social attachments due to American Thanksgiving which are already a big chunk of the month, November is also the month of yardwork for me on account of all the trees around my house not only throwing their tens of thousands of leaves on the ground but also having the gall to expect me to clean up after them. I spent hours raking, mowing, and mulching leaves each weekend, and then additional hours in a fallout provoked by my allergies, who were mad at me for having the gall to spend hours raking, mowing, and mulching allergens.

October offers me much more open weekends on account of fewer leaves, so I’d be in a better spot to actually follow through on my creative intentions.

Alternatively, @kfwyre, rather than spreading all the topics around between various groups, might it be better to simply do them all under one group, like ~talk or even ~tildes? Sure, every timasomo post wouldn't neatly fit into any one group, but IMO it's worth making accommodations so it's easier to manage, and less people get left out.

Or, if we ask nicely, @Deimos may even be willing to create a temporary group for it next year, like he does for the yearly Advent of Code event.

I just realized I forgot to reply to this! So sorry! I'm thinking Timasomo having its own group would be great. Definitely better than the scattershot approach I've done the past two times.
