It would make sense if the software was good, complete, and full fledged out, but it's largely not. It's half-assed, buggy as hell, incomplete, and now requires an entire support department to justify the subscription for the asinine development practices. A massive number of SaaS products would work just as well hosted on the customer's hardware, but that doesn't lend well to subscription models and the reselling of the data it allows.

      It's nothing but greed.

You mention Netflix for the new content, I say it's a shit model because I have to pay to see what they have (yes there are search services for it now, but those are relatively new). Would you go to a grocery store that had a door charge to see if they had bananas in stock? The blockbuster model was better, I go to a store, see if they have something I want, if not I walk out with all my money, if so they get a sale. This is Amazon's streaming model if you don't have Prime, but Amazon's interface is shit and the prices are too high for a "rental" let alone a "buy" for something that you still don't actually own.

Welcome to the future, you own nothing, everything is a subscription. Now, that'll be $2.99 for access to be able to buy eggs.
