    I’m wondering how it’s profitable to do this, given that it’s a subscription service and royalties are quite low. How do they get more money out than they put in? Or maybe they don’t, but they’re hoping to get other subscribers to listen to their music?

      Can't speak for musicians at a higher level, but it definitely is a status thing for "undiscovered" artists. If you can tell people you have 10k monthly listeners, everyone is going to take you...

      Can't speak for musicians at a higher level, but it definitely is a status thing for "undiscovered" artists. If you can tell people you have 10k monthly listeners, everyone is going to take you much more seriously than if you are sitting at 1k or less. I would hope no one would take advantage of something like this for profit because that makes them an even bigger idiot than they already were for goosing their numbers.

      I had the same question. Trying to influence the algorithm with free accounts to get songs recommended? So essentially algorithmic payola? Or perhaps they're using the numbers to get business...

Or perhaps they're using the numbers to get business contracts? eg: "look big producer guy, my song has X million streams, you should sign a contract with me" ??
