The interesting figure is that Youtube has turned into this generations MTV.

Also disappointed they they do not have Twitch numbers represented, that would be interesting to see

It's funny you mentioned youtube turning into the new MTV. I've never thought of it that way but you're totally right. Even more so now cause they're trying to become mainstream with their new TV...

That's a good point, Twitch is a huge part of most teen's media intake these days. I ctrl-f'd on the Pew Research report and unfortunately found nothing about Twitch

I'm 17 and this is pretty accurate, almost no one I know uses Facebook. The main reason I don't use it is my parents are on fb and I don't feel like I can speak freely with my parents able to see everything I say. And the general presence of parents can be awkward as well. One of my friends that actually uses Facebook updated her profile picture and she has her parents saying how grown up she looked in one comment and the comment above that was some guy hitting on her saying she was hot. And honestly the complete anonymity is what first drew me to sites like reddit.

It's not all that surprising to me. I have cousins that are in that 13-17 age range and have hardly seen any of them using Facebook with a few exceptions. I honestly think the fact that their parents use it is a deterrent and the younger generation is using more anonymous sites like reddit to get content they want. And things like snapchat and others to keep up with friends instead of facebook.

A Pew Research Center study on teens, social media and technology found that just 51% of teens aged 13-17 use Facebook, down 20 percentage points since the last such survey in 2015.

About 89% of teens said they were online at least several times a day, with 45% saying they were online “almost constantly” — about double the number from 2015. About 95% of teens said they owned a smartphone, up from 75% two years ago.

When it came to which online platform they used the most, Snapchat edged out YouTube, 35% to 32%. Instagram came in a distant third, at 15%, while Facebook managed just 10%. Twitter Inc. rounded out the top five on both lists, with just 32% of teens saying they used it, and only 3% saying it was their most-used social network.

I've always been surprised by Facebook's ability to keep adding users - maybe 5 years ago I (clearly, wrongly) predicted that Facebook's stock price would start sliding once they started losing younger users, who would eventually switch over to the latest social network.

But I think over time, there's been more value in smaller more targeted social circles (Facebook >> Instagram >> Snapchat) so there hasn't been a compelling reason to move away from Facebook since it's now more utilitarian than it is cool.

Good summary from Seeking Alpha here -

    1. Yet another report has been released saying that Facebook is losing its cool among young users.
    2. We've been hearing these reports since 2013, and FB stock has increased seven-fold in that time frame.
    3. Coolness doesn't matter for Facebook; Facebook is a multi-purpose internet utility that essentially everyone has.
    4. Instagram is cool, and whatever youth engagement Facebook is losing, they are getting it back through Instagram.
