Skype has gone the way of AIM and MSN, for me and anyone I know that used it over the last decade. Especially for business. I have never seen a bigger move to slack than after the forced changes that Skype 8 brought to desktop, trying to turn the app into insta-snap-skype. It's really beyond me where microsoft got their demographics info from, because it sure as hell didn't gain anyone in the teenage/young adult range, it just bled off all of its professional users instead.

The competition for Skype is fierce, and it's definitely peaked (in terms of household & business use) - personally, the companies I've worked under had all moved to either Slack or Mattermost, which is business-oriented, and of course there's still Discord which appeals to gamers. It's hard for Skype to compete with so many different services that focus in one area- Skype can't really be a catch-all anymore, now that the options are broader.

It's hard for Skype to find a middle ground.

Absolutely. I used to use Skype primarily but I have since migrated over to Slack, Discord and occasionally Steam. Skype is still decent enough if you want a quick one on one video call with someone that has an account, but I can't stand using it anymore for text conversation. The design is overcomplicated "modern app" trash and some of its features are just outright creepy, like the auto text reading reply bot suggestions they integrated into each response.

Edit: Interesting about the Microsoft Teams. They're a little late to the party, aren't they? Then again, I guess that's Microsofts mantra. Office 365 came out years after google docs/other work services made "in the cloud" popular.

I really wish Skype could fix itself and focus on it's core features. It's still the best video chat app I've been able to find. Which unfortunately still leaves much to be desired. I do like that...

I really wish Skype could fix itself and focus on it's core features. It's still the best video chat app I've been able to find. Which unfortunately still leaves much to be desired. I do like that they are keeping classic Skype around. It shows they at least hear that people truly dislike the changes they've made.
