Hopefully they can move their app to a marketplace that respects freedom and privacy. The one good thing that's come out of all of Google's evil deeds is that alternative services have risen to combat the tech giant. If the trend continues then we can see them continue to grow.

More people are choosing not to,. like the behemoth Fortnite/epic using their own launcher. Google was not pleased

Yea that was awesome! I was impressed by that move and its great because Google has been tightening their stranglehold on Android recently. The EU hit them with that 500 billion dollar anti-trust fine as well. Hopefully when the Librem 5 comes out Google will have even less of the market share.

Degoogling should become a popular hobby soon. luckily we have DuckDuckGo, findX and other alternative search engines. I can only see it getting worse from here.

Have you (or anyone else around here) used this, and if so, how does it compare to other FOSS offerings? I've been using duckduckgo as my main search engine for a while now but it's not always fantastic with results, and I find myself going back to google for a search here & there. Does Qwant work any better (or worse)?

I did use Qwant, and it's a really nice search engine, however i moved back to sigh Google because i'm just used to it so much. I did put Google and Youtube in Firefox's multi-account container.

Do the containers actually sandbox anything? I was under the impression that they were just color-coded tabs meant to sort different browing (i.e. shopping is blue, work is green), but I could be wrong. If so, I'll probably give firefox a shot again if so, it's still my desktop browser but I've gotten away from it on my laptop (can't remember why though). I'll give qwant a shot too, so long as I'm leaving google I'd like to try out all my options.

Huh, didn't know that. Probably time to give firefox another shot on my laptop! (ditched it for Inox a little while back for lower cpu usage, but sandboxing the google plugins is enough to go back)

For me, I've used Ubuntu (and other Linux distros) exclusively on the desktop for about ten years now. I find it far more functional than Windows ever was, and I used to participate in Windows beta testing. I switched to DuckDuckGo recently; results have been mixed there, but Google's search is now so dominated by sites trying to sell me what I'm searching for that even a Google search is frustratingly fruitless.

I haven't yet experimented with offerings like ProtonMail, although I have been reading about them. Mail can be a hard thing to get right, and Gmail (mostly) gets it right for me.

Google Photos and Maps still can't be beat, in my opinion. Those two are so far ahead of the competition that they are in a different solar system.

Well you've pushed it too far, it's perfectly fine to start just with a search engine - that's the biggest single source of data google has about you. The mail would be the second best, and apart from protonmail there are other options. But using just 10% less google is already better than using 100% google.

They all work as they should be. And i believe you were aware that none of these came from multi-billion $ companies? So, next time don't go with such high expectations.

It's possible but personally I can't be bothered to go 100% google free. You simply can't compete with services like Youtube or Drive or even Maps (I've tried OSM but the route it plans is like 20 minutes longer to my work then G maps). I use DDG which has honestly gotten pretty good, and there's always !g for when it doesn't give you what you want, but that's about the extent of my Google rebellion. Hopefully there will be a viable competitor someday

I'd agree though that Google's offerings can be hard to beat, free and simple to use is a killer combo. However Ubuntu once installed is a good replacement for Windows imo.

But yeah I have been avoiding anything Google where I can. I think the hardest one is Google Maps because I haven't been able to find a reliable enough alternative. OpenStreetMaps is a great project but I always have a lot of issues searching destinations.

I use DuckDuckGo, Protonmail, Firefox, NewPipe (instead of YouTube), and have a phone with Google services removed and install most things from F-Droid (I download a few things with the Yalp Store).

A recurring problem evidences itself here: users' acceptance that the company providing the service may or may not respond. The trade-off is "free" vs. "no support or dialog with the company that controls your experience." Example: Google Phone -- it's free, but if you have a problem, who you gonna call? As all the wonderful and free services Google provides become more a part of our lives, so does the acceptance there is nobody you can appeal to when things go awry -- just a machine/program with the possibility of human intervention.

Are Google trying to have an app store in China? I thought it was just going to be a censored search engine.

This just route blocked sites traffic to proxy1.ahoy.pro:3127. Which is mostly useless in China because proxies are detectable.
