    This was a super interesting read, especially with all the recent discussion around tildes realtime chat and finding the right protocol.

    That said I can't say I know anyone who uses XMPP, but I can't think of a particularly good alternative either. Most of my friends are on Signal, and for everythingone else it's either SMS, email, phone call, or occasionally Facebook Messenger (with no account).

    Man, I can't really see myself not buying this thing. Maybe I should get it over with.

    Edit: I think I might have seen some discussion on matrix's Librem 5 community channel that the chat app supporting matrix and the like will come at a later date.

      I'd be leery about preordering, depending on where you live. Lots of independently developed phones like this end up lacking the LTE bands to actually function on North American carriers, and as of yet, I've heard exactly zero details on their LTE modem's band support.

      That said, if they live up to the hype, and the Librem 5 is usable in my area, I'm totally getting one, even if it's expensive for the hardware provided. Guess that's the price you pay to be the customer rather than the product.
