It also is inexcusable compared to the old days. Because they're trying to be commercial and give views to a lot of big channels. And they can fuck off. I hate what Youtube became.

Definitely. I think it's ridiculous when you go onto YouTube and then the trending section is all major stations. I mean it's not hard for the Jimmy Fallon show or the Ellen Degeneres Show to have millions of views. And that stuff washes out all the other content. They need to have multiple trending sections. They need to have a separate trending section just for all that talk show and Hollywood stuff you know is going to pull in millions of views because there's channels out there that no one's ever going to see with great content.

You can subscribe but you have to find the stuff you like first.

I've talked with a guy that's been studying this topic as a post-doc at Harvard's Berkman-Klein center, it's really interesting.

Here's his thoughts about this article (I wish people posted this stuff somewhere more readable than Twitter, but oh well): https://twitter.com/JonasKaiser/status/1038110627238240257

He links to this thread, where there's some analysis and charts that the NYT article seem to be somewhat based on: https://twitter.com/raymserrato/status/1036349167394795527

And he published this article back in April if you're interested in reading more: Unite the Right? How YouTube’s Recommendation Algorithm Connects The U.S. Far-Right
