As a moneyless Brazilian teenager in the 90s, shareware was my thing. Had a lot of fun with the first levels of Earthworm Jim that way. I never paid anyone, and pirated a lot too (Duke Nuken and Aladin comes to mind). The import taxes and the difference in currency exchange made software so expensive that no one even considered paying for it. This is still true to some extent.
