It's pretty misleading that the author starts off with "Big data and corporate social responsibility go hand in hand" yet 90% of the examples in the article are non-profits or small companies that are using the data for good. The companies that own the most data certainly aren't using their data for social responsibility but rather profit at the cost of social responsibility.

This doesn't seem like what most people think of when you say "big data." Big data, at least to me, is like the big privacy-invading stuff. Google filtering through my emails, Facebook logging and correlating my GPS with other people, all my app and web actions being tracked, all my purchases being filed away and all of that being bought and sold. That sounds more like the big data I know and don't particularly care for. And I don't really see it doing the world at large any good.

I hold this stuff more on the level of like OpenStreetMap, an open, transparent dataset that anyone can benefit from. Then again I guess the title of the actual article doesn't say big data does anyone any good. Just "data".

I think of "big data" simply as "large collections of data." I don't get more complex than that. Who has it, who can use it, who must protect it... those all matter. But it's the next step past...

Ah, yeah, that makes sense too. For me the "big" has always felt like a callback to crap like "big pharma"

Shouldn't this be tagged "paid content" or "propaganda" since it's basically a HP Enterprise sales pitch?
