Those recordings of Duplex interacting with people are causing me some serious feelings of existential dread and anxiety. If I hadn't read the context of them before listening, I honestly don't think I would have been able to tell it wasn't a real human in most cases.

I... I think I need to lie down under a warm blanket for a bit. O_o

I was watching Google IO today while dealing with UTF-8 issues (that I probably introduced) and the fact that a 3rd party doesn't escape their commas in the values of their CSV files while simultaneously not allowing you to choose a different delimiter (I did not introduce that).

It made me question why I don't do something cooler.

As someone that has had to regularly work on manually fixing fucked up corporate databases, such as unsanitized CSV files with customer “comment” fields (with lots of unescaped commas) in them, in order to do analysis and datavis on them... let me just tell you, your work may not be “cool” or glamorous and it may be super tedious but it’s still important, especially for those of us further down the chain that rely on those databases being usable. ;)

If it makes you feel any better, I think probably at least 90% of Google's employees aren't doing anything interesting either. There are very few people/teams overall that work on exciting stuff like this, I think the large majority of their employees are doing pretty boring stuff dealing with advertising, search results, gmail spam, etc.

But today I was just struck by the juxtaposition of some of the most interesting applications of computers... and the least.

I can barely get my Google Home to understand what song I want it to play. I definitely don't trust it to speak on my behalf.
