the reddit thread on this article is pretty interesting because there is so much discontent in the replies to it. it kinda goes to show you how shaky reddit's grip is on some of its userbase. there are a lot of folks only being held there basically because they don't think there are any good alternatives or because they don't know any alternatives in the first place; there are a bunch of people who think reddit is shit but don't think it's shitty enough to leave; there are lots of people who somewhat enjoy reddit but have massive gripes with its system; there are users who are just totally blackpilled to the idea of social media or reddit-like sites and as such have given up on the idea of fixing them... etc, etc. even given the echo-chamber supporting technology on which reddit is built, i find it remarkable how few people actually seem to especially enjoy using the site in that thread,

That's basically where I'm at with reddit right now. I don't know where else I can find an aggregate of my niche interests, otherwise I would have left a long time ago.

I'm so over the front page of reddit, but I do like the backpacking and camping subs, the subs for my football team, and a few others. There is no other one stop shop for that sort of, so those keep me coming back. Reddit has mostly killed the niche message boards as well, it seems.

Haha, are you me? I'm currently subbed to ultralight, trailrunning, NFL and my team, and a few video games that I'm interested in.

There was never, in any board meeting that I have ever attended, a conversation about the users

This is the saddest part to me since it’s the users who control that growth. I was a “power” mod, had multiple accounts in centuryclub and helped grow a few subs from an idea to fairly successful subs. In all that time, I never told people to join reddit because it was always such a toxic place full of hate and division.

I agree, I'd have a hard time recommending reddit these days. A lot of the subs on there these days would've been individual forums years ago, so whilst I do like the fact it's collated in one place, it's also the biggest flaw when there's power mods/users sit top of their game across all the popular subs. If your opinion doesn't follow the majority of the sub you post in, your voice is totally lost

I think it's interesting that he grouped Discord in with Twitter and Reddit, since I wouldn't have based on my personal experiences. I'm guessing I'm missing some aspect of what's been going on with Discord, but for me it has simply replaced what IRC used to be for me - a general platform where I can join specific groups to chat. It feels like a collection of walled gardens to me, rather than an overarching community with a specific culture and connected subcultures/subcommunities (like Twitter).

EDIT: thinking about it further, I guess what he's referring to is all the alt-right people on Discord who have planned violent (and fatal) protests. So the proliferation of these harmful groups is similar, but it still feels different to me because of the structure of the platform.

Discord is different because it's separate (mostly) private groups, but it's another example of "we're building a platform but not paying attention to the harmful things people are doing with it"....

There was an article earlier this week about it again: https://slate.com/technology/2018/10/discord-safe-space-white-supremacists.html

Thanks for the link, that was a good overview of things.

on Discord a lot of the participation comes from people who are mostly hoping to find an abasing joke or chat about violent video games safely without fear of offending someone. And that makes Discord an ideal place for far-right recruitment. Its spaces provide room for people to socialize in hate—to forge connections from which social beliefs can grow. If you hang out with Nazis and racists long enough, what begins as cruel humor can give way to a set of convictions, one that doesn’t need to be approached with a layer of irony.

I guess I shouldn't have been surprised-- this tactic of using humor and memes (and video games communities) is such a common theme in this sort of radicalization; it's honestly quite scary.

Imzy was nice, and it's a shame it didn't survive. One thing that didn't help was allowing users to create their own groups. You ended up with very niche, and dead, groups. And there were a couple of people who were only there to push other people's buttons and they were left to get on with it.

Someone should do a social-media-site post-mortem site where they interview founders of now dead social media sites.
