gab, the social media website which has become an almost entirely right-wing-dominated alternative to twitter and defines itself as a website dedicated to the protection of free speech in contrast to twitter's supposed censorship of right-wing voices is likely to be down for at least a brief period as its hosting service has told them to fuck off, basically. gab's owners themselves expect the outage to be a few weeks long as of now, depending on how soon they can find a new host--if they can, that is. it seems likely that there will be a scramble to deplatform and blacklist gab similar to the deplatforming of alex jones earlier this year, as they've already been kicked off of paypal and stripe, and i'm sure more services will follow in effectively blacklisting them.

it'll be interesting to see where people go when the site goes down, since gab is the home of quite a few people who are banned from twitter and other services completely. personally, i'm guessing that minds.com (which also has a significant contingent of right-wing voices on its platform) is the likely option for the broader internet types while the more imageboard inclined will likely slink back to either 4chan or 8chan, but it's tough to say. it's also going to be interesting to see if this damages gab--they have seen a massive uptick in views, as they infamously boasted yesterday, as a consequence of the tragic synagogue shooting in pittsburgh, but with that uptick has come a great deal of scrutiny and the aforementioned deplatforming. i'm skeptical that this will hurt them, but i don't know that it'll help them either.

UPDATE: gab has apparently just lost their CTO completely to a resignation. the reason cited is "relentless media attacks", so evidently the increased media attention is actually doing some degree of damage to the platform already. presumably this is not a good sign for the platform.

I read this as: all of our payment processors have ditched us, our hosting company kicked us off, we can no longer make money off of this cesspool of hate. Time to bail.
