For the last 3 months, TikTok has been hijacking Gfycat to redirect traffic to their app/download page and have amassed more than 90 million views that way (via the accounts I've found so far). They have a few dozen bots that will constantly upload stuff with tiktok links/watermarks and then turn around and spam that on reddit with dozens more accounts. I'm sure a lot of their traffic is genuine, but a nice chunk is being driven by spam/paid employees.
The shit they pulled with DMCA take-downs of videos/articles critical of Musical.ly (for essentially enabling child exploitation/sexualization) was disgusting enough, but this is icing on the cake. Bytedance is scummy as fuck.
That would help explain the (what sound like) ridiculously low engagement rates.

App researcher Apptopia reports similar findings, in terms of TikTok’s surge. However, it noted that the app’s engagement rates (the portion of monthly users who open the app daily) was still behind the rest of the group. Apptopia said TikTok had a 29 percent engagement rate, compared with Facebook’s 96 percent, Instagram’s 95 percent, Snapchat’s 95 percent and YouTube’s 95 percent.
that always bothered me so much. They had a "have to be 18 to make an account" thing in their ToS to cover their butt but musical.ly was easily 80-90%+ 12/13 year olds. and they'd get featured!!...

I hate that Pinterest is taking over image search results, I hate that me.me is corrupting/destroying any search for a meme template, I hate that TikTok/musical.ly are cramming themselves down our throats and ruining gfycat/imgur/youtube. It's a shame that investors are blind/uncaring to the cancer that these sites/apps impose on existing communities just for the $$$$.

I have no idea what tiktok is, so I spent twenty minutes reading about it+related articles on wikipedia. I am too old for this crap.

You're not alone! I honestly thought it might have been a resurgence of the Kesha song.
