How exactly would this work? I'm guessing the chip is basically an embedded key card which can't actually connect to anything other than NFC receivers.

Microchipping would allow them to monitor their every move even more accurately.

Why would they use NFC when it has significantly less range (only about 4cm unobstructed) than standard RFID (several feet even when obstructed)? RFID makes much more sense for acting as an implanted keycard, IMO.

And as for how such a system could work, Scotty from Strange Parts recently did an episode where he made his own DIY RFID tags and afterward he visited Impinj (one of the largest RFID device manufacturers). They have a few networked, location aware RFID systems that could work well for that purpose... just imagine instead of merely being used for inventory/item tracking like in the demos they showcased, it being used to lock/unlock doors or even computer systems based on which employee it identifies as walking up to them.

p.s. I absolutely don't support the idea... implanting your employees with microchips like animals is dystopian as hell... but it's definitely doable and probably trivially so, is all I'm saying.

Sure but this could all be done with a key card. Tracking wise its no more sophisticated than key cards, It still won't let them track people outside of the work building. Obviously asking...

Obviously asking everyone to go through this medical procedure is very wrong but I think it shouldn't be worse tracking wise.

Well fuck me that's a horrible dystopian idea that's probably going to be sneaked in some places soon. How about the boss got one too and everybody had access to his data as well.
