I wonder if this is going to start becoming more and more common across different platforms, which might end up causing some of the major players to need to reduce the portion that they're taking to prevent everything from turning into a huge mess again where people have no idea which is the "correct" place to get an app.

Fortnite also decided not to use the Play Store to avoid Google's 30% cut, and similar things are starting to happen in the PC gaming space as well, with the Epic Games Store taking 12%, and then Discord undercutting them even more with only 10%, while Steam is still taking 30%. This will probably motivate game devs to try to push purchases towards those other platforms when possible.

I'm surprised they ever did this. Google play and Amazon both make you buy movies through their websites instead of the app, so I thought this would be pretty standard. I don't think people would be deterred by having to go to a website instead, and certainly not 30% of potential customers.
