This is the first time that the CNIL applies the new sanction limits provided by the GDPR. The amount decided, and the publicity of the fine, are justified by the severity of the infringements observed regarding the essential principles of the GDPR: transparency, information and consent.

    ...

Moreover, the violations are continuous breaches of the Regulation as they are still observed to date. It is not a one-off, time-limited, infringement.

Note that this fine is on the very low end of possible fines under GDPR. That stands in stark contrast to the language used regarding the fine in the ruling.

Fines for Google could be on the order of a percentage or two of yearly global revenue of Google or of its highest parent company.

This is just the beginning. Information must be given about use of consumer data, and it must be accessible to you 90 year-old grandmother. That's the only thing good enough under GDPR.

I, for one, am glad with even the symbolic victory against Google, a company that has long time shamelessly abused legal loopholes and avoided paying taxes for it's Europe operations. No company should be above the law like that.
