It has been my sole goal to get my friend group to stop using facebook messenger and move to telegram for a while now. I've been campaigning for Telegram, but in reality I'm okay with other apps that respect privacy if anyone has other suggestions. We've been deeply embedded with this facebook group chat, having it for possibly 5+ years with literally tens of thousands of messages and photos. My friends are all non technical and it has been really difficult to get them to switch, but the recent problems with facebook ( see https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/13/technology/facebook-data-deals-investigation.html and the many, many other articles dealing with this) have made them much more open to the idea.

If you have concerns about your messages being kept private, I'd personally not use Telegram, as it

      • relies on home-brew cryptography, which I understand is far from usual best practices
      • didn't support E2E group chats last time I looked
      • by default didn't use E2E for normal chats the last time I looked
      • has transparency issues (IMO) and was built by the creator of VK, about the russian equivalent facebook

I currently use Signal, which admittedly has its own issues such as forced registration by phone number, but I'd say it's a more trustworthy piece of software. Matrix is very promising, but it and especially the main "Riot" client still have noticeable UX issues so I'd not recommend them to non-technical people.

While your points are true, I'd like to point out that there is a $300k bounty if you manage to crack their crypto. It's been there for quite some time and nobody's claimed it yet. As for Signal,...

As for Signal, my biggest grip with it is the extremely poor desktop app it has. Compare that to Telegram with its native Qt desktop app that is fast as it can be and has the same features as the mobile one.

Is there at least a good reason for them making their own encryption?

no, actually that should be a bad idea. Inventing new crypto systems makes the probability for flaws higher. You should use known and well researched ones.

I'm not knowledgeable enough to judge if their crypto was useful or not but, at the same time, didn't Signal invent its own crypto as well ?

My main concerns have to do with data collection, however "home-brew cryptography" scares the shit out of me, I had no idea. I vaguely remember some anecdote from college where a textbook on writing cryptography implementations was written, then everyone took it as bible and wrote awful cryptography implementations, and then the author basically had to come out and say "Don't write your own crypto if you're not an expert"! Don't quote me on that, I'm not sure if its true.

However being built by the creator of VK and having transparency issues does make me nervous regarding data collection. Another user below wrote about Signal, which seems to be much better than telegram. It also seems it has fixed its reliance on google play services, which is good imo. In the comment I wrote in response I agree that Riot is fantastic and I use it in other scenarios, but they've pushed back heavily on that.

I have also transitioned my family to using Signal. I really wish they would build a native toolkit desktop client but it seems to be the best platform currently available. I'm keeping an eye on Matrix but it's unreasonable to expect people to jump from service to service at my whim every 6 months.

In addition to the excellent points deing raised, Telegram's support is entirely volunteer. This means that if something goes wrong, you may not get any response from their support at all. I had an issue with moving phone numbers and they totally ignored me (both on their official support and on their twitter, when I still had a twitter). In addition, the only official way of reaching support is... on Telegram. So, yeah. You can hopefully see the problem with that.

I suggest matrix.org or signal, preferably matrix.

using matrix/riot.im would be my wet dream, but that was met with heavy resistance. Mainly because "nobody else I know uses it", which I guess is a fair point if you don't want too many apps on your phone. Although I vaguely suspect it is just pure laziness. The different rooms features would be fantastic as well, since we have some people who like politics and some who will just spam post shitty memes to get us to shut up about them.

Signal looks to be a good middle ground, I didn't originally consider since you needed google play services, which you appear to no longer have to use! I guess that shows how long I've been campaigning for this.

I have convinced a few ppl to use signal, but I haven't been very lucky when it comes to matrix. Hopefully better clients (both desktop and mobile) will change that.

I'm in the same camp as you, all my contacts use Facebook and WhatsApp. I only have success convincing my close friends giving Telegram a chance, not for privacy but convenience (gifs, stickers, bots). At the end they still rather use WhatsApp, non-tech people will always choose convenience over privacy. Tech people will always recommend Signal but Signal lacks many features non-tech people rather choose to than privacy.

I'm having the same problem with my fiancee and messenger. I want to switch to XMPP but when I asked what she thought if I quit using Messenger she said, "Well I'll just email or text you then."

I'm always surprised how people are so bothered by installing one extra app. It's not like it's without benefits.

Exactly. Yet they have no problem installing an app for every website they visit.

I know! I mean, it's also one extra account, but it's not like we don't sign up for new accounts every day too. It's like, if everyone could just hop over at once, it'd be so much easier.
