this is the latest in a series of apparent efforts by apple to stifle right to repair in the tech domain. they have historically lobbied against right to repair in states like new york, and last year seemed to take a step toward killing independent repair of macbook pros (although this was later confirmed to have jumped the gun). the bill they were pushing against in this case seems to have gone down in part because of them; somewhat irritatingly, they also seem to actually have the ability to facilitate all of this if they really wanted to--they apparently just kinda don't?

I do out of warranty logic board repairs as a side income. Apple actually has hardware in their newer macbooks pros that prevent you from repairing them, even with the proper tools. They've started using using chips that are unavailable to anybody besides Apple. (specifically the ISL 9240). They probably have some kind of a deal with Intersil to only sell this chip to them. This chip dies all the time. The genius bar will charge nearly the price of the computer for that. This is one of the lesser known things apple has done to stifle repairs.

If Apple thinks you can't be trusted to self-repair a battery it's like they're saying you can't be trusted to pull a spoon out of your garbage disposal without shredding your arm or to put a kettle on the stove without burning yourself. How can you even hammer a nail into your own wall to put up a painting without smashing your own thumb? Ikea basically shouldn't exist if Apple's argument were to hold any water.

I'm all for consumer protection, but trying to argue that we shouldn't pass consumer friendly regulations because you think your entire customer base is comprised of klutzy, late-night infomercial tier dumbfucks is taking it a bit far.

This is also a far cry from the days when Steve Jobs had the Macintosh design team sign the inside of the housing and insisted the inside should be as beautiful as the outside. . .

I just hope someday someone invents a phone with a removable battery.

Lol. There were some companies which did, LG I think? Barely sold. Majority of people really don't care unfortunately (or fortunately, depends on the reader).
