It'd be really cool if they turned around and used F-droid and open source applications but I think they're simply not gonna do much in that direction considering they also don't let you unlock the bootloader anymore.
By F-droid, I meant the program, they'd most likely use their own repository with their own programs but yeah, it's very unlikely but it'd be cool.
I've never heard that rumour but I think it'd most likely fail unless it's Android-based. Something like MicroG wouldn't be legal for them to use from what I know though.
Yeah, it'll probably do fine in the chinese market.
I'm fairly sure it would be against Google's terms of services otherwise manufacturers wouldn't be using the proprietary programs and being forced to include certain applications.
My understanding (take this with a grain of salt) is that Play Services, and many of the most famous Google Apps, are a bundle deal. If you wanna include Google Search, Assistant, Maps, Gmail, and most importantly, the Play Store, you need to include Play Services and agree to some rather strict terms about what other products you are allowed to develop and sell.
MicroG is a project that reimplements a lot of the Play Services APIs so that apps that depend on Play Services still run. For instance, if you just have stock AOSP without Google services, Uber and Spotify likely just won't work. Now, some of these APIs are essentially just wrappers on Google server calls (think: the Maps API), which, while relatively easy to replace technically, is very difficult to replace with quality data. Similarly, it would be really hard to develop a sufficient replacement for the Play Store itself. The hacker community uses things like F-Droid, Yalp, and Aurora; the last two are major terms violations (especially for a corporation to bundle with a phone), and the former is not an attractive enough platform for them.
So yes, they can, and likely will, ship a custom OS. Yes, it will probably be based on Android. But, the Play Store and Play Services really unite the otherwise fractious Android ecosystem, and not having them makes your platform significantly less useful for consumers. (Where do I download Facebook, Instagram, Slack, or TikTok?)
I didn't know about that store but yeah, if they have it they won't go for F-droid but I still stand that it would be cool if they did.
Yeah.. this whole bootloader ordeal is just disgusting, I'm never buying (or well can't at this point) one of their phones because of that.
