For people coming in later: the topic originally linked to this article on Rolling Stone, which focused just on the iTunes replacement.
In this case it may have been better to delete my link and resubmit the Bloomberg story from scratch. The bit about iTunes is the only part of the story that I care about and I posted it because...
In this case it may have been better to delete my link and resubmit the Bloomberg story from scratch. The bit about iTunes is the only part of the story that I care about and I posted it because I'm curious to see if anyone would have anything to say on that topic. Changing the link also changes the scope of discussion into something I didn't intend and am not really interested in - Apple Watches and iPads and so on. This post is no longer the link I submitted, or the title, or even really the same topic, so it shouldn't have my username on it and replies shouldn't appear in my inbox, IMO. (This kind of thing might make for a good discussion in ~tildes.official though.)
I doubt it's a priority for Apple given that high-bitrate AAC is indistinguishable from lossless codecs.
I have yet to see any data showing that people (regardless of equipment) are able to discern lossless from a high-bitrate lossy format.

Oh I thought you were talking about iPhone. I have the Plex app for iOS to play my FLAC files.
There’s also apple lossless.
Not sure if this better fits in ~tech or ~music. I guess ~tech since iTunes handles movies and podcasts too. Either way, I'm not sorry to see it go.

If you were to make a top-level comment with your thoughts on iTunes, I'm sure a discussion about that will still emerge.
That makes sense to me, sorry for kind of hijacking it. This will be a bit unusual then, but I'll take ownership of the thread from you.
Works for me, thanks.
I tried to edit this in, but not quickly enough: if you'd like to talk about iTunes specifically, maybe a separate topic in ~music for that?
Nah, I'm good. Once was enough.
