This is an awful story, and as the article mentions (and I said as well), the amount of misinformation about it and people trying to exploit it has been ridiculous. I can't imagine being one of the family members or friends directly affected and trying to understand what's happening on the internet related to this.

I thought this was an interesting article though, and goes a little more into the kind of mindset and environment of these online groups that are leading to this happening repeatedly recently.

As a little further reading, Elfy Scott (mentioned in the article as someone that was already paying attention to the "Darkcel" group) published an article as well: How the alleged murder of a blogger has revealed the dark reality of ‘incels’

How do we deal with this culture? You can never stop all violence, but surely we can either deradicalize people or prevent them from being radicalized in the first place as effectively as they are...

It's definitely not a simple topic, but as a quick response, I think we really need to stop treating these groups like they're just as valid as any other. They need to be aggressively kicked off (and kept off) all the major platforms so it's not so easy for them to pull vulnerable people into them.

People want to find a community or group to be part of, somewhere that they feel like they "fit in" and are understood. It's a natural desire, but we can't keep acting like hateful groups are just as valid as ones based on, like, enjoying mechanical keyboards or birdwatching. Companies need to start taking a stand, instead of just shrugging and saying, "we don't want to try to draw any lines" until someone ends up dead.

I'm sure you get this all the time but it's refreshing to hear someone with any amount of power say that. I agree with you completely. I feel powerless in the face of tech giants indifferent to...

I wasn't born in the west/1st-world, only look at news online since Sep last year, and don't understand why nothing is done against evidently dangerous/destructive people who are turning a civilisation into a budget themepark. And I include all colours/creeds and both sexes in that statement.

At the same time, social media exhibitionists are just as incomprehensible to me and my ilk/peers. One article said "normal girl". Umm, nope; not elsewhere. We have 98 teeniebopper-aged people here, and if one of us posed in photos as that dead girl did, cut heads with bloody mouths in the background, she'd be avoided. I've seen real cut-off heads and worse. That's neither a normal decoration choice, nor a sign of a healthy mind.

There's a detail in this story that gets under my skin more than any others: his use of "subscribe to PewDiePie" following his actions (the same thing done by another incel murderer). That they self-contextualize their violence with something as trivial as a meme is... I don't know the words for it, but I know that there's something deeply unsettling about it in a Clockwork Orange kind of way. I feel like it compounds the inhumanity of the act. It feels like it's a window into sociopathy.

Yeah, that's part of what's getting to me. The first time it was used I was taken aback by the absurdity of a meaningless meme in an actual massacre, and now I'm troubled that it might be self-replicating--that violence is "worth it" for the sake of a meme, or, at the very least, that memes can even come to be shorthand for real-world violence in the first place.
