I am the main mod over at r/FloridaMan, so I've already read this but haven't really talked it out. I think we do a lot to keep it generally light-hearted, but I've also experienced the distress it can cause. One Florida Man was killed while riding on a mattress tied to the top of a car. Of course that got posted several times. His daughter actually mod-mailed us asking us to remove it, which of course we did. I've deleted tons of overly morbid stories throughout the years, some have been seriously messed up. They're never posted just once, either, we might get a dozen or more over the course of a few days as the news travels.

The sunshine laws in Florida make it legal to publish details of potential crimes and mugshots, and the systemically racist nature of policing means some demographics are going to appear more than others. We have very successfully implemented a zero tolerance policy for bigotry that has meant the buttholes can't last long or find support. These days bannings for racism and bigotry are rare. Usually they are clusteres around one post that draws them in like moths to a flame.

I do think there's benefit in laughter, and the subreddit has highlighted several instances of police abuse or misuse of power that I can think of. I do think the subject matter requires a responsible hand to make sure it doesn't turn overly ugly.
