The Global Times reports that all was as normal and that her fans urged her to show her face and remove her filter but she refused, instead apparently saying: "I can't show my face until I receive gifts worth 100,000 yuan ($11,950). After all, I'm a good-looking host."
That's good. Even if she wasn't disclosing the fact that she was using a filter, I really don't see much of a problem with this. It's basically just high-tech makeup.

Wasn't sure if this should go in ~tech, ~life, or ~news. I'm shocked that this technology exists, and that this woman used it long enough to get "a follower count of more than 100,000 on Douyu"...
I'm shocked that this technology exists, and that this woman used it long enough to get "a follower count of more than 100,000 on Douyu" and fans who would give her "more than 100,000 yuan ($14,533, £11,950)" without any technical problems (until now).
I will never understand why people throw so much money at camgirls (it's not like a high-class escort where you get a happy ending). A fool and his money...
I didn't interpret this to really be a "camgirl" situation, but I could totally be wrong. That said, I think your perspective on this is a bit reductive, perhaps becuase you might not see where...

That said, I think your perspective on this is a bit reductive, perhaps becuase you might not see where something like this could fit into your life? I put on twitch streams while I'm working, and throw twitch "bits" at the streamers. I also tend to follow smaller streamers with smaller audiences, so they may to recognize my name in chat if I'm a regular, and I like having exchanges with them whenever I pop in. Why do I give them bits? Well, it keeps them online, keeps them alive, and it makes their streams better if they choose to put the money back in their streams.
I'm mostly with OP on this one, but I appreciate this perspective. I definitely can understand why someone might give money to a video game streamer. If I use some freeware that I really like,...
I'm mostly with OP on this one, but I appreciate this perspective. I definitely can understand why someone might give money to a video game streamer. If I use some freeware that I really like, occasionally I'll send a few bucks to the programmer behind it. I think the trouble comes from the fact that the line between "streamers" and "camgirls" has really become pretty blurry. There are a lot of women online that will brand themselves as streamers, but really don't do anything besides play music and talk to the camera in low-cut shirts. It's like, anywhere from G-rated softcore to full-on pornography. And at that point, it feels like going to a strip club. In my eyes, it's a waste of money.

What a crazy rabbit hole. Some vloggers are using make up to trick the filters into changing their muscle tone, face structure, etc -- https://youtu.be/kcA1nebGzgg

Because in a lonely and alienating world, a streamer can provide the illusion of a friend.

There's a saying in my country.
Everyday a fool and a clever person get out. When they meet, they close a deal.

I knew it was only a matter of time until someone deep faked their way to success.
