Yeah fuck no, they dont need that data and its a garbage reason for wanting it. Netflix is paid, there should be no tracking or selling of data, money is what pays for the service, not my data....

Is there not a way for an app to just check if the screen is locked? Couldn’t they just check that and if the device is locked, only send audio? That seems much more foolproof than the device...

(I don’t use Android so I’m not sure if this is even possible)

I would imagine the purpose is to determine when someone is watching content in transit. Dependency on shifting cell towers could introduce significant latency and therefore predicting this could prevent video quality downgrades if handled correctly.

Alternatively, if someone were in a subway, for example, and loses connectivity for a few minutes, Netflix could buffer a larger portion of content to ensure continuous streaming.

Seems like a user experience-focused feature, and not a data-gobbling scheme to profit off of privacy. I’m for it.

I’d assume people watching Netflix on the subway would download video at home via their (presumably) faster home internet connection. It would make sense for Netflix to push people toward that option in this example, would it not?

I'm sure you could have full resolution if you were willing to download in advance but, for those who didn't plan it, this might be a way to provide more consistent streaming.

I just wish I had the data to stream Netflix every day. I only get a limited amount of data each month.

But what you are describing would be more relevant to location permissions, no? Physical activity sounds more like whether or not im running. It could be a user focused feature, but it doesnt mean...

Yeah apps can do this on android But that isnt an excuse to access permissions they in no way need.
