According to the New York Times article about this, Facebook is most likely announcing this because documents were unsealed in a court case today that revealed it:

The extent of how many apps Facebook had cut off was revealed in court filings that were unsealed later on Friday by a state court in Boston, as part of an investigation by the Massachusetts attorney general into the technology company. The documents showed that Facebook had suspended 69,000 apps. Of those, the majority were terminated because the developers did not cooperate with Facebook’s investigation; 10,000 were flagged for potentially misappropriating personal data from Facebook users.

If the investigation required the cooperation of the app's developers, that either means Facebook was not tracking who accessed the users data, or it means 69,000 apps were known to be accessing user data and refused to indicate what data was accessed/ if that data had been purged.

      Either seems egregious to me.

Under "Activity Log" > "Search History" all my entries now display as You searched Facebook or You Searched "".

The issue that I have with Facebook isn't even necessarily the data misuse by apps (on paper; it's possible FB hasn't been the best in this area, but I'm talking about on paper)... I get it,...

The issue that I have with Facebook isn't even necessarily the data misuse by apps (on paper; it's possible FB hasn't been the best in this area, but I'm talking about on paper)... I get it, abuses happen, FB monetizes based on data and advertising and is a way to connect people, there are no free lunches. etc. But Facebook... as far as I know has repeatedly lied about other things that they do, been dishonest generally... and bought up their competitors Instagram and Whatsapp. And many people have no choice to use Facebook. You have a choice: use FB or have no social life. So... they could be a little bit more transparent, you know?
