I'm surprised at how surprised people are about tracking. If you use most websites, you should expect them to know everything you click, everything you hover, and everything you interact with. Wait until they hear about the software that polls your mouse location every 60hz so that your exact mouse movement can be analyzed.

I'm not saying this is how it should be, but I'm still really surprised people don't grasp the amount of data that is collected on them.

Watching mouse movements seems like the sort of thing you'd do to figure out how to improve the design of your website, and you don't need to associate it with individual users for that.

Mouse movement tracking is done extensively on commerce sites and banking sites. It’s a form of security on banking sites and a way to see what you are interested in on a site like Amazon so they can send targeted ads. Not so much for site design anymore, although it can and has been used for that as well.
