The reactions to this article on the /r/mturk subreddit are pretty mixed and interesting. Some people think it's not a good representation, others are unhappy that it might bring too much attention and cause them to have more people to compete with for tasks, and others are unhappy that it might bring negative attention that causes fewer companies to want to use it. The article's author commented in there as well.

It's a weird little ecosystem that I don't really know much about personally, I've only ever had some passing contact with it through reddit. The /r/HITsWorthTurkingFor subreddit used to be very active, and I think I used to help them with AutoMod or some other bot/automation type stuff. It's been a very long time though, so I can't remember specifics, and it looks like the subreddit isn't too active any more either.

There was a website that paid you to beta tests other sites. You would screen capture and talk into a mic about your experience with the site for a predetermined amount of time (most often 15 minutes) and get paid $15 for each. You had to pick from a list of available jobs and meet criteria, but I could get sometimes 3-4 a week. I know there were other good random one-off jobs posted on that site but it eventually ended up with survey jobs like mturk.

It's been forever, but years ago I did some tasks on it. You have to really be smart, because the best jobs are saved for people with high scores. You get a high score by completing tasks accurately and in the time required. I picked one that was like 'find this grey shawl that was on Season 3 Episode 4 of Hannah Montana' or something, which I couldn't complete. I took a survey that I tried to speed through, but smart researchers will throw in a couple repeating questions and disqualify you if you don't answer them the same way. It didn't take much for my score to drop below the threshold for the best tasks so I gave up on it. I think I made like $5 through the whole experience.

I used to have a lot of down time in my main job, so MTurk was a great supplement. I was already on the clock for one job, so if I could make an extra couple dollars an hour doing this work, all the better. I think people who focused on it as their sole job did a lot better than me, as they knew how to find the best HITs.

It never seemed worth it to me to explore it any more. It didn't seem like, even at its best, MTurk paid a livable wage, so I just browsed /r/HitsWorthTurkingFor for decent HITs and did them when I had time. I never made more than a few hundred dollars per year. But it was easy and some of the surveys (generally academic ones) were fun. I especially liked when they asked very personal questions (I'm looking at you, Angela Listy).
