I recently tried LibreOffice on a 27" 5k iMac myself to see where the project's at these days and found the text to be quite blurry (rather like going back to Windows after using a Mac). It looks like they're overriding the text rendering and either doing it themselves (😔) or they've configured the text rendering engine they're using to not fall back on the native macOS CoreText facilities (😒). I don't have a solution but this seems to be what's actually going on. If you only need text documents or presentations and not spreadsheets, have you considered LaTeX? It's absolutely best of breed, but does require more learning (but if you're a Linux user you're probably used to that).

I'm curious if you ever found a way to improve text rendering on a Mac. I'm wrestling with this particular issue now, myself.
