    The article quotes Perens:

"One of the goals for open source was you could use it without having to hire a lawyer. You could put [open source software] on your computer and run it and if you don't redistribute or modify it, you don't really have to read the license."

Perens contends the [Cryptographic Autonomy License] breaks that model. "The reason it does is if you are operating software under the CAL and you have users, you have the responsibility to convey the user's data back to them under certain conditions," he explained.

It annoys me when people try to conflate licences designed for source code with licences for services built on said source code. The two concepts should be kept orthogonal and independent as much as possible. In my opinoin a source code licence shouldn't limit the ways a user would use said code.

If the original copyright holder of the code wants to place restrictions on both concepts, how should they do that in your opinion?
